I don’t think balance is a goal nor it should be, in my opinion, part of strategy is figuring out a way to overcome an obstacle you have no obvious counter to, but there are definitely ways. Hand cannons on walls obliterate entire platoons of elephants, for example.

Next step is to make one civ that can make artillery in the dark age.

Well obviously if you play good enough you could counter even that… by aging up really fast and making cavalry and somehow outwitting your opponent.

Or why not just remove Spearman and crossbows from a civ. There may be ways to beat cavalry mass by these civs. You just have to try hard enough.

Who cares about balance?

You know what I meant, there are obviously some slightly more powerful units than others on purpose, this is not a 100% balanced game and never could be.
