+5 HP and -1 Attack for the Militia Line?

I think the Militia line’s trademark should be providing the cheapest HP per resource to offset their drawbacks. But currently, even a Knight provides 0.88 HP per resource, which is higher than the Long Swordsman’s 0.85. I don’t think that’s acceptable at all. Even Pikemen provide 0.91 HP per resource.

With +5 HP, Long Swordsmen would provide 0.92 HP per resource, and they’d finally be a better meatshield. After decreasing their attack by 1, I guess they would be fine.

Lets see how properly the biggest buff to infantry / Militia-line since 1999 plays out first, shall we?

I’d argue for the reverse.

Despite the total hp/cost, maa dont take bonus damage from the common units you see in age 2/3 (barring UU) so they’re already tanky enough.

Longswords in particular, lose in age 3 due to knights beating them head on in even cost battles. Reducing 1 attack would hurt alot given the knights have more base armor and the hp increase wouldn’t be able to keep up.

Yeah, Man-at-Arms seem fine.

What about just giving 5 HP to Long Swordsmen and their further upgrades?

Infantry just had a significant buff, let’s first wait to see how it settles before changing it again

I use maa to refer to the militia line as a whole - habit coming from aoe4.

What I mean is that the milita line, at any age isnt so much lacking in durability as it is in shear damage potential. The critical point being longswordsmen, as the effect of the changes is minimal in age 3.

But to answer your question, then yes, +5 hp to the longsword is good. I’d even settle for it if the migrate it from 2HS to longsword so we have a more consistent power spread in age 3 to imp, as opposed to gating cost durability AND damage increases behind the age 4.

By the by, what would you say the ideal power level for the militia line would be? For me its 2X militia vs X knights fighting to a draw, with milita line narrowly winning the even cost engagement.

Long Swordsman and Champion providing more HP per resource than Cavalier is a must for me. Luckily, this seemingly insignificant +5 HP boost achieves that. After that, the Militia line is fine for me.

Agree. THS should get your proposal. And Champion should get +10 HP even.

Not necessarily against further militia line buffs, even though I’d rather let the current ones settle in first.
However I think that buffs of similar units, like Woad Raider, Berzerk, Samurai, etc. should come along with them.
I rather have the UU be the default choice and the generic one be the more niche option, because it brings variety to the game and makes the civs feel more different. Like how for Mongols the Mangudai is the clearly better unit and default choice and only in certain circumstances you go for generic CA.
