It’s no surprise that the Wonder is practically never built in ranked games. I don’t have the exact data, but it’s clearly noticeable that no match ever gets that far…
So, the Wonder is only built in medium or lower-level team games, or even in FFAs, which actually makes those games pretty fun. I really enjoy building a Wonder and then just spamming powers randomly.
That said, I’d like to suggest something, and I’d like you to support this idea: what if, upon building a Wonder, ALL god powers from all minor gods were unlocked?
Let’s go straight to an example: you’re playing as Zeus, so you don’t really have any purely offensive powers besides the Bolt in Age I and Hera’s Lightning Storm in Age IV. But suppose you want to make Colossi: then you don’t have aggressive powers to use in the late game against other civilizations that do, like the Chinese or Japanese. And if you are Norse or Egyptian, you don’t really need to pick minor gods based on whether or not you plan to build a Wonder, since all powers would become available once you build yours.
If all powers were unlocked, and whenever you used one power from a certain age the other from the opposite minor god went on cooldown, this system could actually work and make FFAs or team games in custom lobbies much more dynamic (since, as I mentioned, no one ever gets to the Wonder stage in ranked games).
Cool idea, dunno how the UI would have to change to Support it, unless it cycles between powers of the same age. Hoping from one power to the next.
As for it seeing more/les use, The Wonder cost is gonna be the shackle still of seeing it or not on ranked and even if it did it wouldnt matter much since theres not really much “balance” going around with Wonder, you basically win if you get one since you Just snowball very Hard.
Exactly what I think. There really could be an arrow to switch between the powers, and once you used one heroic age power, the other would also go on cooldown.
I think the current Wonder Age bonus modifiers are too strong, your idea is much cooler. A reduced Godpower discount but then more god powers to choose from would be much cooler and sometimes actually better.
A lot of godpowers are very situational and some of them are just useless in very late game.
Another idea: unlock a new unique god power for each major god so you have a total of 8.
Eh it sounds fun but would completely make eggy OPBAR, as their age4 GP combinations are by far the best im the game. Multiple soo plus tornado ane meteor.
The other civs don’t get nearly as much late game goodies as eggy.
A little off topic, but I think a cool wonder boost would be a fifth hero for the Greeks. Maybe Diomedes, with stats similar to the three Mythic Age heroes. Perhaps he could have an ability similar to Arkantos or the Einherjar with a speed boosting shout.
Let’s not forget that the Age IV powers will go on cooldown if any Age IV power is used. In other words, if a player has Meteor and Tornado, or Tornado and Son of Osiris, they will only be able to use one or the other at a time.
I don’t think wonders need to be buffed in power. They need to be made easier to get to. Their current build time and cost is appropriate in 4v4s, but in smaller games it takes way too long and costs way too many resources.
IMO they need to scale the cost of wonders with the number of players in the match, treating the current cost as the correct amount for 4v4.
There’s too much power to use all abilities. Wonders already buffs heroes and MU (Imagine what Onna-musha will do under the wonder buff). That’s enough to give you an absolute advantage. As for divine abilities, I think the buff should be removed entirely. Instead, give passive favor generation equal to 20 vills on a Greek Temple.
And yes, I agree with the previous commenter. The price should be lowered. Let’s try 3,000 of each resource first and see how it goes.
The Wonder Age is not designed as a gameplay mechanic for ranked 1v1 matches.
The Wonder Age is mostly a feature for casual players that like to play single player of coop vs. AI. It’s a power fantasy for people that love to build up strong armies before attacking. Like half of the players of any Age game will never attack before having all technologies researched. They want to build the “perfect” army before attacking. For those people having the ability to spam god powers and myth units is like the ultimative power fantasy in AoM.
This would be ruined with the Wonder Age was easier to get to but would offer a lot less bonuses.
For some reason, I thought the same happened to the heroes. Strange. Still, it’s really sad that the game has mechanics that aren’t being used. I get the feeling that waiting “2,000 years,” like in Age of Empires 1, was the best idea.
Most people play AoE1/2/4 with wonder victors disabled because it just doesn’t feel satisfying winning or loosing against a timer.
AoMR replaced the timer with giving you massive bonuses to finish of the enemies instead. The cost is prohibitively high for people that actually know how to play the game but it’s pretty affordable to someone who plays the game a lot more slowly, like most casual players.
If the wonder would be cheaper it would ruin the experience for casual players because every match would involve a wonder for them.
So yeah the wonder is practically unreachable in ranked 1v1 but that’s ok. Not every single thing in this game has to be designed for ranked 1v1 matches.
I’ve played 160 team games and only seen the Wonder 3 times. In 4v4 games it happens even less often, because finding 8 equivalent players is even more difficult than in a 3v3 game.
Spending 15k resources is too risky. Only players who are already winning do it. And they don’t have time to build a wonder, so the game is won early.
We used to have a mechanic that would provoke the turtle to attack. If the guy was covered with five layers of walls, that was a countermeasure. Or we had a turtle strategy and victory through a wonder. The fact that this isn’t “satisfying” is news to me. In my old AOM, Aoe2, and Aoe1 games, it was just a tool. And I’ve never played with anything disabled. I generally don’t like being restricted.
Another idea would be to also unlock all the myth units available to your civilization. It would be funny to see an army of minotaurs and centaurs fighting side by side.
yeah why not. But maybe only the ones available to that Major god.
Fimbulwinter is the worst! Like it’s just so awfully designed. But it used to be much worse on release where they would spawn for every single TC, even in a 12 player match and you could recast it immediately after the cooldown.
Giving access to all God Powers would give you more options to use other ones instead of having to recast the same one again and again.
