Every time the game gets loaded up, the same message pops up “A running process may be interfering with the correct operation of AoE2, this may be caused by anti-virus software; malware, game over lays, or other active processes on the pc” this same message then proceeds to make me push “ok” and it closes the game, I have deleted the game and tried re-downloading it and the error still occurs, I even deleted all the files for the game and the same message still pops up.

This sort of issue was not happening before until I purchased the “Age of Empires 25th Anniversary Collection” which offers the following items;
Age of Empires: Definitive Edition
Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition
Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition - Lords of the West
Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition - Dawn of the Dukes
Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition - Dynasties of India
Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition

Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition - Mexico Civilization
Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition - The African Royals
Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition - Knights of the Mediterranean
Age of Empires IV: Anniversary Edition

Every other Age of Empires game opens and runs without this message except Age of Empires 2

  1. Be more descriptive to what may have caused this sort of error since I have not downloaded or even turned on any sort of “anti-virus malware.”

The game launches and plays the intro like it normally does, and take me to the main screen selection when the intro of the application is done.

I got the same issue, yesterday I could still play. Tried to login to the microsoft store and xbox account a few times alas no change.

Same problem here. Interestingly, I have no problem on my steam account. So it only seems to affect the microsoft store version.

Finally, it was because my Xbox app wasn’t logged to my Microsoft Store app. I logged and all worked

j’ai acheté age of empire 2 DE sur le store, ( Chaque fois que le jeu est chargé, le même message apparaît « Un processus en cours peut interférer avec le bon fonctionnement d’AoE2, cela peut être causé par un logiciel anti-virus ; un logiciel malveillant, un jeu sur des mises en place, ou d’autres processus actifs sur le PC », ce même message procède alors à me faire pousser « ok » et il ferme le jeu, j’ai supprimé le jeu et j’ai essayé de le recharger et l’erreur se produit toujours.) je l’aie acheté steam il y a deja un moment, et marche bien!

même si j’ai le message le jeu se lance, après sa me et manipulation détecte en rouge et les menu disparaisse!

samedi matin, j’ai joue a age of empire 4, et le soir voulu rejoue et impossible, bug disant,
disant de vérifier si j’ai un abonnement, ou si je suis connecté!, j’ai l’abonnement core pourtant, et marche !

du coup que faire ?
j’ai vire tous anti virus, sauf Microsoft defender!, désinstallé et remis le jeu marche pas!
ha j’oublie la chose que j’ai fait dernièrement mettre Windows a jour! surment a cause de sa ?!


wasn’t sure where to post this, fyi i didn’t touch any game files or anything like the screen here suggested, restarting the game corrected it but its still a bit unusual as i’ve never ran into this till november 2024 in aoe2 only on top of that

There is nothing I can do except finish with the phrase in the Age of Empires 2 definitive. “” I logged in on the Xbox and rebooted my computer.
Also, sometimes it works well, but the screen stops and the game is forcibly terminated, and the phrase appears above it. Is there a solution to this?

le fameux bug me le refais ceux matin! je suis sur le store microsoft moi

marche bien hier matin, et depuis le bug, sa me le fait que sur le store en plus microsoft!!

Hello, I’m Korean Steam user and have this very serious problem on AOE 2 DE since 08-NOV-2025 (It has been ok until 05-NOV. What happened in the meantime?).

I can not play The Art of War campaign due to the pop-up error message during the tutorial video.

So I tried a lot of things that the official customer center replied as below. (including trouble shooting from AOE users)

  • I was using Windows 10, but upgraded to Windows 11 Home edition 25H2 - 26200.6584.
  • I unregistered all MODs in the game.
  • I deleted the Vaccine (Ahnlab V3 365). So I have only Windows defender now.
  • I turned off the NVIDIA overlay setting in the NVIDIA App.
  • I turned off the Steam overlay setting.
  • I Verified the game files in Steam
  • I disabled OneNote and iCloud.
  • I uninstalled the entire AoE 2 DE on Steam Library and reinstalled.
  • I uninstalled entire Steam client and reinstalled.
  • I quit all programs on the Tray icon.
  • I Ran both ‘steam.exe’ and ‘AoE2DE_s.exe’ as Administrator mode.
  • I linked my Xbox profile and disconnected.

But nothing improved. FRUSTRATING!!

I’m waiting for a further official response, but the wait is getting longer and I’m not very hopeful. Should I give up?
