Advice for playing other civ than French?

I’m platinum 2 and play French as main civ, but I have no idea why but whenever I try any other civ than French I keep losing and drop so much in ranking. Tried HRE and Ottoman for a bit and dropped to Gold 2. Then When I switched back to French I won 11 match in a row and raised up to Platinum 3.

I’d like to try another civ but i struggle with the other civs. Any advice would be appreciated.

The way I play French is usually I go school of cavalry, make 2 knight and then rush for second TC. With my knight I usually try to deny one resource (gold or food). Then after that I make a huge army of archer and knight (and sometimes spear if the opponent goes for cavalry), and usually manage to take control of the map during age 2 while making a lot of villager, and putting pressure on the opponent. I usually don’t go age 3 until the opponent does because having control of the map is so much more important I think. When I feel i have good control of map I start trading. And I usually end the game in age 4 when the opponent start running out of resources and I have really good siege units that other civ dont (cannon, ribauldequin and culverin).

I want to try other civs but I keep losing, with HRE infantry i find it really hard to take control of the map with infantry, and usually feel forced to rush age 3 since most of their advantage are age 3 and doing so what happen is I get surrounded and always run out of food so fast (MAA and Horseman cost so much food).

With ottoman I really struggle fighting against MAA in age 2 and will usually also need to rush age 3 which is something i usually dont need to do with french. So I end up playing on the defensive unless im agaisnt a civ that doesn’t have knight or MAA (so half the civ).

I could try mongol or rus because they also have knight, but i really hate the hunting mini-game I think it’s one of the worse mechanic in the game (anti-thematic and full of dead animals everywhere, and a mini-game at the start impacting the income for the whole game is a bit lame). Mongol are interesting but keeps saved me from losing so many times with french because i use them a lot for map control. Also the lack of good age 4 siege unit seems like a huge disadvantage (french have all the best age 4 siege).

Anyway, would be curious to hear what is the weakness of French, since it doesn’t have high winrate at higher ranking, and how differently i need to play the other civ to be as efficient.

Hello

My main civ is the Holy Roman Empire. When playing against the French, the main weakness of them is that since their 4th military unit is an early knight, it is very common for them to be used for rushing, and this has become the base strategy for most of the players that play this civ. However, this rushing looks easily counterable if you do two things: 1.- Always have spearmen ready to counter knights, 2,- and archers to counter more enemy archers that look for your spearmans 3.-, do not use horsemen because it is a waste of resources against French (the royal knight himself counteracts them, and in cost effectiveness an archer supplies this job better). Then for later game the strategy could change. Then for later game the strategy can vary. On the other hand, I never understood why many French players discard the Guild Hall, except for those who want to continue rushing using the Royal Institute. The Guild Hall set in Stone, would allow them to have infinite Tortugeo capabilities in Imperial, building bombardment towers and keeps massively, but hey, I guess Rush’s strategy is still the preferred one.

On how to play HRE: In general when the base game came out, until the 4th season, the HRE strategy consists first of building the “Aachen Chapel” as a landmark, and taking advantage of its aura of quick resource collection for several purposes: 1.- create a large feudal army and rush fast, 2.- accelerate the speed in which one goes up to the age of the castles leaving enough units to counter a possible rush. 3.- Do not build any military units, and accelerate the advancement of ages for an early rush in Castles with a landmark that acts as a barracks with speed x5.

The detail is that since the 4th season, when they added 2 unique technologies to the Meinwerk Palace feudal Landmark, it is a good strategy to build this one instead of Aachen Chapel, especially against civs where it is more difficult to rush the HRE in feudal, (such as the Abbasids or the Delhi Sultanate), or if the map you are on lacks a strategic place to put the Aachen Chapel (starting Wood, Gold and Food too far from each other).

What you should also keep in mind when playing HRE is that you are not forced to use an early Men-at-arm only combo, you can also use a Ranged unit combo, which while it has no bonuses for these, their Prelates can speed up the gathering of wood or gold so efficiently that in the long run, it allows you to build as much as you want better than even the English themselves.

Finally, you must know how to “position” your prelates on the map. You should ALWAYS have one in every position where multiple villagers are gathering together, and it is ALWAYS best if multiple villagers are gathering resources in the same area. It is best to put them near the logging, mill, or mining camp so that they give their blessing to everyone who happens to deposit resources. Have a good day.

Try beastyqt’s season 5 longbow build and just go all in. Especially focus on constantly spending your resources on something when you notice your getting above a few hundred resources. The Build (don’t worry so much about the timemarks as what order you do stuff as it appears):

7F; 2 Farm

3G

1W

###########
3 Sheep Vils > LM

~20W (take off wood to farms as needed: LONG BOW = 5 FOOD/7 WOOD, think 5 seven like the gun]

*3:45 Wheelbarrow upgrade

LM finishes; builders move back to Food

Build 2 longbows

Double Broadaxe upgrade

*5 MINS = Build barracks & house with wood villager

*6 MINS Build longbows & spears and Horticulture Upgrade

*6:30 MINS Build Blacksmith with wood villager

13W = barracks upgrades (ranged attack > defense > melee > siege)

14W Push with spearmen & bows, bring 1 villager for towers

15W Start producing man-at-arms & 2nd barracks

~16W Build Farms (16-24 total)

Age up with Kings Palace

Constantly produce from all production buildings, focusing on archers as your main killer. Use line formation and pick off vils first in all situations (avoid being under enemies TC unless you are sniping vils with a good mass and your supporting a ram push). Research rams early.
