It happened to me with the Return of Rome DLC for AoE 2 and KotM for AoE 3…in the case of AoE 4 it would be the second one after The Sultans Ascends.
Wait wait wait wait, wait a minute!!!
Guys, I just realized something with the latest news.
There’s going to be an Age of Empires 3 DLC!!!
And it’s going to have Danish-Norwegian and Lithuanian-Polish Civs. Plus a lot of Scottish and Irish units.
Interestingly, Age of Empires 4 is going to have a Viking (Danish-Norwegian, I suppose) and Scottish DLC.
Both DLCs share Scottish units:
Coincidence???
I suspect they were already working on the Danish and Polish DLC for AoE3, and considering they need voice actors for unit narration, they figured they could save on dialogue by using these actors for both AoE3 and AoE4.
And as a result, they chose Vikings as the unit for AoE4. The reverse (continuing the Danish DLC of AoE3) is also possible.
Yes, I think many Scottish units from this Baltic DLC will also appear in the Norse DLC for AoE 4 (for example, Gallowglass, Kern, Clansmen, etc., etc., etc.)…
Age of European Kingdoms
Some of these AoE3 unit models even look medieval enough to simply be reused for AoE4 (or vice versa, they are AoE4 models reused in AoE3)
Yes, I’ll bet anything we’ll see many of these units in the game… in fact, we already saw that the Clansmen are a unit in the AoE 4 DLC…
Clansmen (Militia unit) from Dark Age onwards…
Gallowglass (MAA unit) from Feudal Age onwards…
Lowlander (Spearman unit from Dark Age onwards)…In Imperial Age can be upgraded to Hand Cannoner that can mount to be a Ranged Cavalry…

Celebrating Age in 2026 – Where We’re At, and Where We’re Going
New info about Vikings:
In Raiders of the North, the Vikings emerge not just as raiders of the past, but as a dynamic civilization which bridges the gap between the sagas of old and the rise of medieval Scandinavia.
- They are defined by fast and powerful melee infantry, competence at sea, early religion, and the communal Longhouse at the heart of their economy.
- Complete Sagas that grant lasting bonuses and establish early Sacred Groves on Relic sites to bring Hamingja to your side when fighting nearby.
- The Viking Bondi is a more powerful Spearman replacement that is trained from both the Longhouse and Barracks, carrying a shield for additional defense and gaining a shield wall ability when grouped together.
- The higher-ranking Hirdman replaces the Man-at-Arms as a hard hitting, resilient, and fast front-line infantry that comes with a higher cost.
- Rounding out the Viking melee infantry roster and roaring to life on the box art is the Berserker, dangerously fast, light on their feet, and with the ability to enter a frenzied state of berserkergang it would be wise to keep a close eye on your wood line.
New info about Scots:
The Scots will prove admirable adversaries not just to the Vikings, but across the Age IV civ roster. The Scots are a resilient people who spent centuries forging alliances and defending their rugged lands.
- The enemies of the Scots have learned to be weary of ambush nearby stealth forests, as the Scots infantry can see right through it and may jump out with an unrivalled ferocity.
- The Scots Mustering Hall provides a quick way to field units at a discount, including the mighty Gallowglass and nimble Border Reivers.
- With a claymore in both hands and draped in mail, the Gallowglass are the Highland warriors she tells you not to worry about.
- When the Gallowglass stand shoulder to shoulder with the Scottish Pike and Lochaber Axes, the Scots infantry form a powerful schiltron to stop enemy cavalry charges in their tracks.
- Highland Cattle are known for their hardiness and ability to eat nearly anything, here they eat your berry bushes which provide a steady and sustainable food source.
- To protect your precious herd, the Scots Tower Houses provide vision and safety from enemy raids, especially with an attached barmkin to bring the “coos” inside.
Can someone post high definition images so that we can zoom in and see the units?
The 3D modelling for the buildings for “Vikings” (bad name) looks very poor in quality, reminiscent of AoE3DE’s style and suggests they’ve cut back on outsourcing the production of assets from high quality art studios and are depending on in-house artists, who unfortunately are not capable of delivering the same quality as AoE4’s launch. Beyond the quality of the 3D assets themselves, that Castle looks nigh fantasy in design much like the namesake of this civilization. Additionally, the Scots are frankly just another variant civilization, which is sad because they deserve better than being a reskin of English.
Honestly, I have zero interest in this DLC. I was not intrigued by the pick of two civilizations that are so similar to existing civilizations, and I am even less interested now after seeing the quality of this product.
Having said that, I wish the best for the future of AoE4. I think the game is gold. I simply think that it lacks the investment and care that it deserves, I would hate to see Khmer or Aztecs done with such poor quality modelling, or Spain done as a reskin of France. Hopefully it will get more DLCs in the future, and if it does, I’ll check up on it again then.
The forum has resolution “Limits” for the images, and the link of the images has some problems (dont let you donwload those images), so i took captures.
This is the source:
Thanks for the resolution increase. Now i can theorize about Scottish units. Let’s see:
*Highlander Charger.- Theoretical name, could be Clan charger, Warband, or clan Member (AoE3 name). I have a theory that it’s the same unit as in the trailer with the sword. I suppose the sword is a late-age technology, or they’re two different units. I’m guessing shock infantry.
Scottish Píkeman.- Theoretical name aggain. Could be pikeman. Finally, a true pikeman in AoE4. Yeih!!! The “Lochebar axeman”, i didn´t know if gonna be another unit with better stats or a improvement of the unit like the Mali.
*Highlander Gunner.- GOOD!!! I really wanted this units. Okey, very good.
*Border Reivers.- Wow!!! Didn´t know the gonna use the pistol version. Cool.
Yes, the wiki says the unique Scottish units are:
-
Clansman (the same unit from AoE 3) (it’s like the Rus’ militia)
-
Gallowglass (the same unit from AoE 3) (replaces the MAA)
-
Border Reiver (basically the HRE Black Rider)
-
Highland Cattle (basically Malian cattle) (eats berries and produces a constant drip of food, like milk. It can be sheltered in tower houses)
I read somewhere that they’ll add the Kern, which must be that Scottish pikeman in the picture… with that, you’ll have all five unique units…

No, the kern is different, thats its a “Irish unit”, not scottish. Those spearman of the photo are “Pikemans”, which they refer as Scottish Pike and has a heraldic logo (the X of Scottlands) and “armor”.
The kern instead are units that supposedly don´t have any armor at all, and were skirmishers, like this:
About the Irish Kern
The thing is that many concept about Irish of AoE2 has Gallowglasses and Kerns as unique units, because many literature about Irish told that they fight together.
Those its true, but only for Irish.
Actually: Gallowglass ever was a mercenary from the north Scottlands, from the clans that has mixed blood with viking (gaelo-nordics) and live in islands.
The Irish recruit Gallowglass in mass, to protect their own unique units: The kern, who are ultra-lighty infantry skirmishers: spearmans, archers or javelin throwers.
Technically, the Gallowglass you’ll be recruiting are actually Gaelic-Nordic clan members.
The Irish named them “Gallowglass” in their literature, but technically they were the same unit used by 2 civilizations.
Perhaps Irish could be a future Scottish variant, sharing the Gallowglass, but with many Kern units.
