Age of Mythology: Retold Update 19.3090

Major Gods

Demeter

  • Mythic Age god choice changed from Hephaestus to Hera.

Developer Note: Hephaestus was a choice for all existing Major Gods. To mix up the feeling while playing Demeter, you can now choose Hera or Persephone as Mythic Age choices. This change will bring some more variety to the choices of Greek Major Gods. Saved games with Hephaestus as a choice, like in the Silent Sanctuary Mythical Battle, will retain that behavior.

Lol.

At this point I’m pretty convinced that Demeter is being handled by AI. So instead of having 1 eco and 1 aggressive choice in age4, you now have 2 aggressive choices, and basically the gameplay variety is how you’re gonna end the game, with lightning pew pew or undead pew pew.

They should have adjusted the new gods to be better at what they do. Instead, they use a tired and tested design, Hera, to fix up the mess.

Also Demeter gets access to Myrmidons?

Yeh Demeter now having access to Myrmidons is a MASSIVE oversight….

Honestly I’ve been very supportive and understanding and appreciative of the dev work so far but it feels like ATM they’re just chucking stuff at the wall to see what sticks and aren’t really paying that much attention to the community right now. It’s disappointing. This game hit a really great sweet spot at one point but constant changes and adjustments have been steadily morphing it into something else

I actually had to try it out in a sandbox game because I couldn’t believe they actually allowed this go through…

and it took me 1 minute to figure it out.

I agree. They have been changing things left and right without thinking of the consequences. This last one is a perfect example of it.

Fine, give Hera to Demeter, no problems there. I actually look forward to Cyclops with Hera upgrades. But at the very least adjust the free myrmidons to be free harpies…

Mythic Age god choice changed from Hephaestus to Hera I absolutely hate this change because now you don’t have a economy choice for each age up.

And changing things that don’t necessarily need to be changed, whilst ignoring other things. A personal want of mine and many others is the option to change the voicelines back to legacy instead of things like cyclops, giants and minotaur having new voices. There’s also a big group wanting an option to toggle the Wonder Age for games, same as you can toggle Titans. And gameplay wise, adjustments to gods that actually need adjusting; Leto is a prime example. She’s been easily the weakest minor god since the start, it’s widely known by all, and yet she’s had pretty much 0 attention. Why not buff the automatons? Why not give her another tech that gives her more of an edge and has usefulness long term? These are just some among others.

The issue is these are general, community-wide wants and complaints that are pretty much widespread. They’re not necessarily controversial, they’re either QOL changes that don’t affect those who don’t want the change OR generic buff to widely agreed weak gods. I just don’t get why the devs have utterly blanked on these sorts of issues, a lot of them clearly simple fixes, and instead chase after seemingly random things, tweaks and adjustments that risk twisting the game into something unrecognisable from what was originally promised.

Replacing Hephestus with Hera was a bad idea imo

I really liked the Hera switch and think giving her medusa pairs well with her increased favor. Though I agree the myth unit tech synergy would be better if harpies worked and she got them instead of myrmidons with argive. Also fated arrows doesn’t interact with Medusa like Apollo’s sunray. I think they still have a lot more to do on Demeter, but Hera seems a lot more synergistic with her.

Tested the sirens in the editer and they fixed all the issues it had. Its attack spead is signifiacntly faster, can attack buildings, and no longer has to chram enemy opponents to attack them

This patch doesn’t resolve anything tbh, the broken things remain broken and the useless things remain useless.

Talking about Hera, Demeter doesn’t even have access to Athena for better Myrmidons.

I still hope for a new unique unit that spawns out of the fortress with Argive Patronage and replace Harpy as trainable unit, and obviously that has better sinergy than Myrmidons but the chances are low, they are working on the Aztecs right now I guess, my only hope is that they won’t be rushed aswell.

We should definitely expect more slop from the developers. Clearly there’s pressure applied to deliver as fast ss possible. It’s just amazing that nobody thought about the myrmidons.

Definitely a controversial change. This forum hates it, but I see elsewhere that people are heavily praising it.

I don’t see a problem with “Argive Patronage” generating Myrmidons for Demeter; this makes balancing easier than generating Harpies, and generating free units is an economic bonus. I like the change from Hephaestus to Hera; Monstrous Rage synergizes better and makes more sense for Harpies, and I think Hera is a much more fun choice than Hephaestus.

The developers could make Ares’ tech “Deimos’ Sword of Dread” also affect the Myrmidons.

They should also make the Medusas benefit from “Fated Arrows”.

Also, Myrmidons are useless without Hephaestus’ upgrades… So in the Mythic Age we’ll either get a spawn of 100 units with 70% health that die easily to area-damage troops, or a tired Myrmidon that even loses to a Murmillo. Bizarre.

When they say in the developer note that all Greek civs have access to Hephaestus, they forget that they have access exactly to make their special units stronger and truly playable.

Detail: You can’t train Myrmidon units; they only spawn passively from the Fortress once per year.

As for the other changes, I can say I liked them quite a lot. I think it will be hard for them to make any decision that pleases everyone, since the DLC launch already came out very wrong. I’m happy that the developers are at least trying.

They took the one mistake I expected them to make but they avoided and made it anyway…

This isn’t just about Myrmidons, they could’ve even added the Flying Hippo, or the Laser Bear at that point.
When comparing the Freyr/Chinese/Japanese DLCs with Demeter DLC, it feels like they were made by two completely different teams.
With Freyr, everything naturally clicks in the right direction while this DLC feels like a complete mess: constant changes, constant reworks, and many iterations that don’t seem well thought out

I’d even bet they didn’t have enough time to make a new human Fortress unit, It’s not that they didn’t want to, imo.
This DLC probably should have been released along with the Aztecs, or even a bit later, instead of rushing everything out.

I’m not against the fixes, nor against the team realizing the mistake and deciding to work on it by doing reworks. What they can’t do is dig their heels in and decide to leave everything as it is.
