AI seems off for me

Hi there everyone. I just started playing again after years and was making a custom scenario with some AI. Ive also done some skirmish games. Whenever I play the AI seems to do one big attack and then never attacks again, and in custom scenarios if I do not allow them to go past the castle age they just build and then just chill and wont attack or anything. Ive been playing in hardest difficulty so I figured the Ai would attack and do something. Ive noticed that if I go over 200 for population limits the AI quality really decreases. Its fun when the AI attacks the first time, but then after that I can chill for hours and they just wait for me to do something and they never attack while in the feudal age or castle age even if you make it in the game so they cant go to a higher age. Just curious if other people have this issue and if there is someway to get around this cause I love playing the game with my siblings against computers, but after a while it sorta gets hard when they dont do anything. Im curious also if there will be new updates for more options with the Ai making them play different styles and play smarter. Thanks!

I think the AI isn’t designed to play with a population limit above 200, so that’s why it doesn’t play very well with your settings. You can try looking for custom AIs in the mod browser, but some custom AIs might break and cause issues. If it happens just delete your AI mods and look for other ones that don’t bug out.

Ok I will just keep giving that a try and I will look at some mods I didnt think about that thanks! I did forget to mention above that if i put it at 200 population sometimes the AI still does struggle a bit if I make the game so that they cant go to imperial age

The AI script has been programmed by a human, so if you are playing in very weird settings that the human did not have in mind, it might indeed be broken (and your settings with castle-age-only sound like one of those very weird settings).

The AI does not adapt to your settings, it follows rules, and one of the rule is most likely:

  • If I am in Castle Age, and the opponent is in Imperial Age, then do not attack, instead, research Imperial Age and upgrade units before attacking.

This rule would make sense in normal gameplay. But here, because you prevented the AI from researching Imperial Age, only the “Do not attack” part is applied.

If that is an option I would suggest to let the AI advance to Imperial and just find other ways to handicap it that don’t deviate too much from normal gameplay.

Ok this makes sense and I will just play around with it a bit, thank you for the help and incites

Based on the difficults, the AI is capped on number of villagers. Not sure if this number is scaled by the max pop limit. If not, then that explains why the AI is terrible for over 200 pop games. The AI just dont have enough villagers to sustain a large army.

Try the AI on 200 pop Michi. It’s probably the easiest way to allow the AI to use its full potential lol
