So I tried some AI teamgames. My allies just sit in their base doing nothing while the enemies gang up on me. Please fix this! Better yet, give us a way to give commands to our AI allies.

This would be really nice! A lot of the development team did work on the command and conquer series, RA 3 and beyond had this.
Edit: AoE 2 DE does this with certain AI. Chat taunts actually cause allied AI to do something specific to the taunt:

This is EXACTLY what we need in AoE IV. I’m away from my PC for a few weeks, but I want to see how it works. Such a neat function.

Regarding the AI, there have been patches that have tried to improve it, but it is true that they should give it more love. I still think there are interesting mods, no?
The problem is, we cannot activate multiple mods.
So it really doesnt fix the issue.

I’ve played team games countless times and have had the same experience. I feel the same frustration.
The AI in this game is broken.
AI team games are not possible.
