I would love to host my creations and spec random people playing on them. I hope the editor will be simple to use similar to terraforming in Cities: Skylines, and powerful features made simple for instance zones were things can spawn randomly based on a user defined condition.
For instance you could paint an area similar to districts in cities skylines, and then decide it would be an area where a hunt can appear randomly at a specific spawn rate. Or it could be used for ore nodes locations. As well as terrain geography. Imagine you create the base map, and then you draw an “inner limit” and “outer limit” zone area that would make the coastline or trees or whatever you want spawn randomly with a chance to be slightly different while retaining the general shape of the map. It could help create pseudo random maps like the official ones.
I would also like the ability to decide that the surface area of my maps is bigger than the default. For instance I should be allowed to have a mega sized map count as a normal map if I prefer for gameplay purposes. That and the ability to determine population based on a map, rather than game creation settings would be great for community maps.
The most important to me is, however the editor ends up functioning, that we get some sort of workshop maybe directly through steam workshop to share maps with the community and organize matchmaking queues based on community maps that get very popular. At the very least we should be able to bring them to custom games to play with randoms who haven’t downloaded the map preemptively. I really like how track of the day works in Trackmania 2020, AoE4 could implement something similar maybe with a top community maps of the week kind of playlist.
I can’t wait to share my ideas and watch people play on them.

Nice design! Can’t wait to see what you come up with once it is released!

I am in this boat, but for a completely different reason. It is so much easier to crunch numbers and test comps against each other in the map editor (at least it was in AoE2).

I also hope we’ll get to create custom assets such as custom gaia units or stylized textures and models of trees and ores for instance, and new units with custom stats and behavior, we could make cool world bosses or special map events such as a water maelstrom. There would be so many possibilities!
