There could be an Age Of Empires style game without changing anything that would work in a continuous evolution MMO style where the plot would limit resources to the need to extend the realm, I believe there is a possibility to bring that game to the ambient world, it would be awesome!
They already did that. Its called Age of Empires Online and it was shut down.
