An Open Letter to World's Edge regarding AOE3's Abandonment

Not sure about the situation with AoE Online / Celeste tho given that it’s also using Bang.

What measure do you use to come to this conclusion?

This topic is (right now) the 2nd biggest topic in the AOE3 section ever, just behind Kaiserklein’s mega thread on known issues and bugs.

It’s a pretty solid indication of how strong the community response has been

Thanks! I wonder how they calculate the weight of topics to rank them like that. Oh well, thank you for the info!

Remember everyone, boycott Immortal Pillars. Don’t buy it, and if you bought it with premium already, don’t play it and just leave a negative review.

Just read the open letter again and still also feel annoyed to WE’s decision. Thought I’d just share that.

The anger will only end when World Edge disappears or is restructured.

Or if there are massive overhauls to correct their treatment of AOE3. Regular communication, restarting bug and balance patches, and resurrecting the DLC they promised over a year ago.

Only doing some of these would just continue to promote distrust and anger.

I must thank World’s Edge, since they have made me explore my vast backlog of games on steam that I may not have played yet if the AOE3 DLC had been released

They are really something else. What a darn shame this entire debacle was. I mean the whole leading on, lying, and hating on the game was downright oppressive.

Gotta love that AOE2 is getting an update chock full of AOE3 mechanics and a DLC with 5 civs , and we get dumped with no big fixes and have our DLC cancelled.

Newsflash, WE. I would have been an easy sale for the AOE2 DLC. Instead, I will outright refuse to even look at it. You lost a ton of sales by betraying the AOE3 community. It might not be massive in comparison to the whole AOE2 consumer base, but it’s certainly substantial.

The really sad thing too, is a year and a half ago they could have given us a nice send off patch focused on stability and balance fixes and let us know they were discontinuing service and that probably would have left everyone feeling pretty happy (sad too, but not angry/upset/lied to, etc)…

Now that the disappointment part has waned, I realize what I found most disgusting about their “F off” message, and overall communication.

You see a lot of sorry sorry understand understand but not the TINIEST effort. I’m not talking about big efforts. I’m talking about cheap, quick efforts that can be done by one person and I don’t think it’ll be too much cost for a billion dollar company. Like, for example, $20 flower as an apology when you’re late.

“We understand the last patch didn’t deliver what we promised or what you expected”. Okay. And? Where is the compensation? You say you’re sorry and you understand our anger and case closed?

What about a small, really small, patch or bugfix to deliver what you really promised? What about one person spending 30mins to unlock the past event rewards? What about taking one screenshot by someone who plays the game at least once a month? How difficult is that?

Those remind me of some of the worst people I’ve met in my life since childhood.

They KNEW they had nothing to show last February when making the “announcement”.
They KNEW they still had not a single piece of work done last October yet they called it a “delay”.
They KNEW the DLC will never happen all along.
Yet they lied and lied and then phrased it like they’re doing us a big favor (“Oh we are trying to keep you included!”)

Maybe they’ll resume support for this game some time later. Who knows. But I still will not buy anything from this company unless there is confirmation that the whole communication team is gone. Otherwise I know they will disgust me again.

You’re not wrong.

I just want communication and transparency. We’re not stupid.

It will always befuddle me how and why a company can hold as much contempt for a game under them as much as WE has with 3DE.The only conclusion we can draw from years of mistreatment is that the people in charge despise this game and it’s playerbase.

They are more than willing to banish us from beng a part of this franchise.

They also got our QOL improvements like priests not being selected with all military.

I’ve said it several times before, there are people in the core of the WE management team who really hate AOE3 and want it to die, and we’ve seen this kind of people in other AOE communities. Otherwise, there’s no way to explain their behavior, but when you put it on this level of understanding, you’ll find that everything immediately makes sense.
Before the WE took over, the game was thriving, the developers (The Tantalus and The Forgotten Empires) updated quickly, and the content was huge. After the WE took over, we only got the Mediterranean Knights DLC, remember! According to the time calculation, this DLC was developed and produced by the original development team before they took control of the entire series.
After that? Age of Empires 3 was excluded from all publicity and all competitions. At that time, there was a community volunteer manager who said that “Age of Mythology” was also excluded. At that time, I said “The DE version of Age of Mythology has not been released yet, so of course it’s not in it.” And with the release of Age of Mythology Retold, only Age of Empires 3 was still excluded.
At this point, if some of you still think that this is not malicious, but a problem with AOE3 and our player community, then I think you are all masochists or people suffering from Stockholm syndrome.
