Is there any way to recover hotkeys?
I come back to the game after a few years, and my hotkey profile has been reset to be identical to “Base”.
I put quite a bit of thought into my hotkey profile, and I still have the muscle memory, so this is annoying.
I play via steam, and I’ve changed PC since I last played, if that matters.
The problem might be that steam loaded my old hotkey file, but found it wasn’t compatible with the latest version of AOE DE II, and then reverted my whole profile to the reset.
A few years ago, they changed the file format from .hki
to multiple .hkp
files without providing an automatic way to “translate” from the old format to the new one. Back then, the only option they suggested was to manually rebind your hotkeys inside the game.
That’s the bad news. The good news is that your old Hotkeys.hki
file should still be in your Steam Cloud storage, accessible here: https://store.steampowered.com/account/remotestorageapp/?appid=813780.
You can download it and then upload it here: https://aokhotkeys.appspot.com/editor. This should display your old custom mappings.
From there, you can manually re-enter your old bindings into the current game version. So while it takes some manual work, there’s a good chance you can fully recover your hotkeys.
