Isn’t it a too difficult task for the developers?
A C&C Generals 2 or Company of Heroes 4 would be the better game to represent such timeline.

So you have to alter history and the gameplay to make it work.

Cool idea, but not for me. The entire reason that I enjoy the AoE series is that it focuses on a historical setting >1000 years in the past.

Good thing there are 3 other titles for me to play!

Problem is its 2025, you can’t even make for this timeline a historical game

What People did, “histrionically”, would be a no go to make.

Take your money and buy another game… what you want already exists. Stop being frustrated, Age of Empires 4 is excellent the way it is, adhering to the Age of Empires theme.

That’s what I suspected.
The hype may have been generated, most likely, due to the televised wars currently airing and current games like Battlefield 6 being at their peak.
Although many who vote are probably not extremely active players in the Age of Empires series, mostly casual players looking for something new. Maybe they’re expecting a more interesting contemporary war game than what’s currently offered on the market.

- Personal opinion on possible themes:
But I would never buy an Age of Empires set in the World War I.
For me, the World War I works in an FPS, but not in an RTS.
All the RTS games that have tried, after a few months or a year, people stop playing, for the most obvious reason of all… the lack of diversity in vehicles… that which should attract people, when they realize there’s almost no variety, they end up getting bored more quickly and migrate to other more satisfying games.

I’m not saying this just because I find the World War I tiresome…
But because I myself haven’t bought all the games in the Age of Empires series. This applies to everyone around me, family, close friends, and Steam friends as well.
Just because a game carries the Age of Empires name doesn’t mean it will sell like hotcakes or keep players interested for long.
Just look at other games in the series and see the low numbers.
Incredibly, the most played are AoE2 and AoE4.

- Suggestions (only if it’s truly a contemporary era)::
In my opinion, an Age of Empires game set in the contemporary era absolutely needs to cover World War II and very likely even the Cold War.
That would be the only way to maintain attention for longer and open the possibility of adding more civilizations/nations over time.

Perhaps the right approach would be for Age of Empires V to have five ages of evolution (just like Age of Mythology Retold).

- Problematic Themes:
But if Age of Empires III had problems with sensitive themes… imagine the size of the problem in working in the contemporary age
Even Company of Heroes 2 had serious problems touching on sensitive issues of certain nations, “which I won’t mention here”.
An Age of Empires in the contemporary age would certainly have a good layer of censorship.

- Conclusion:
However, I believe that an Age of Empires set in ancient times could have a cooperative campaign (for 2 or 3 simultaneous players), much more romanticized, with a good script that could easily attract people and could more easily deal with “violent themes” without major problems.
Since a game in the contemporary age will hardly be able to delve into the “violent themes” of history.

In short, a new Age of Empires in ancient age will have much more freedom to address various war themes.
I have no idea if a new game will be focused on adults or children… but I hope they focus on a more adult theme to become a game with a more solid and loyal player base over the years to come.

AOE4 was originally meant to be Victoria Age/ Civil War until WW1, said by Developer of Ensemble Studios

Feel Free to tell me games in Modern that lets you play as Victoria Age Starting, then Imperial Age WW1 Thanks

Although it was originally intended to end with the First World War, this idea was later changed.

Age of Empires 4 ended up being rethought, and it would be a game set in the World War I, the World War II, and would end with the Cold War.

Which, in my view, would be much better to bring more content, such as more weapons and vehicles, as well In my opinion, this later change would have been better than the original idea. Because with this, much more content could have been added, such as: many more weapons and diverse vehicles, as well as more civilizations/nations and varied campaigns.

As the promotional photo itself illustrates:
It shows an American soldier from the Vietnam War using an M16 assault rifle, which is precisely a historical period belonging to the Cold War.

I rather prefer the next entry to be set in AoE III time frame (yes, again)

Cause why not?

Empire Earth 3… my friend, Age of Empires 4 is the only one that brings different gameplay styles for each civilization, completely changing the way you play. You should appreciate that more, not to mention the battle mechanics with unit controls.

I think a new game in the technological style of Age of Empires III would be cool, but including an extra theme :

  • It could be: Modern Age (1453-1789) + Victorian Age (1837-1901).

To redeem AoE3… a much better version… however, we would have to remove what most people didn’t like from the previous gameplay… If it’s to attract the maximum number of people…

That would be cool…

I’d also like to see new civilizations and the classic ones from AoEIII.

For the Indians, I’d like a good separation… like: the Mughal Empire and the Maratha Empire, in addition to the kingdoms of South India, such as the Kingdom of Mysore.

I would also like to finally see the civilizations of: Thailand and the Persians!!!

I don’t know if I’d see all of that… but I’d like to… Rsrsrsrs.

Hardly. There are two other games in the franchise that predate AOE4 that have civs that play even more dramatically different. Both AOM and AOE3 are more asymmetric than AOE4.

May I introduce you to AoE 3’s deck/home city system?

To give you one example.. this is my standard Sweden Deck for Land maps:

And this is my Anti-Cav deck (the last card in the II column moves Hakkapelits, a unit I’d normally have in Age 3, into the 2nd Age, increases their speed and ships 3 of them on arrival. They’re ranged cavalry that’s are good against Heavy Cavalry):

EXACTLY!

An Age of Empires 3 but done well in terms of core gameplay and mechanics. An AoE III but for the modern Era
No build limits, return of trade, no decks and cards system. Just adapt what we got in AoE IV and make it for this setting

I love AoE III as it is but if a new entry in the series would be made from Early Modern Era to Industrial Age, it should keep the current core gameplay and mechanics seen on IV and II.

Just make it with cannons and muskets hehe XD

For your consideration they could borrow some ideas from Cossacks, Empire Total War and Europa Universalis

I feel like is time for Conquest Game Mode!

Age of Empires III has done it before!

Tbf, AoE4 has the most asymmetry economy of all, but that’s an aspect most people don’t enjoy or simply don’t care. And in the late game, most civs will end up with practically the same economy strength so all of that asymmetris go to waste.

The bigger issue I see, too many RTS were created with a “cursed monkey paw.”
You know , where the wish is granted but backfires.

Age of Empires isn’t simply a representation of a timeline, trends or good intended wishes.
It’s a designing philosophy.

It’s not about make a bunch of colorful objects move from A to B. But have a very clear structure,
what is in front of you, while having very deep and complex immersive experience.

Hm.. how so? To come back to AoE 3, I’d say the eco part is even more asymmetric than in AoE 4 when we look at specific civs:

  • Dutch / Indians: their vills cost Gold / Wood instead of Food
  • Ottoman: their vills train automatically for free
  • Russians: train vills in batches of 3
  • Japanese: can’t gather food from animals at all
  • Swedes: their unique house (Torp) collects nearby resources
  • French: their vills are tanky and have a higher base gather rate
  • Malta: after sending the Wingacourt Constructions card, the gather rate of vills nearby towers increases
  • Portuguese: they get 1 free TC per Age up
