Just saw they added a DLC for the old portraits. Why is this paid, and more importantly, why is it so egregious? This should have been the default setting, or just be a toggle. This is especially insulting to people who bought AoM:EE. Just feels very bad and feels like a cash grab, especially since most of these were likely just AI upscaled.

It’ll be the easiest thing in the world to mod in the actual original portraits, so I don’t really mind.
I don’t think they would remove such a mod from the modding section. They haven’t removed other mods that reused assets from their other games before like mods that ad AoE1DE sprites to AoE2DE for example.
They absolutely would remove it, because it’s providing DLC assets for free.
We’ll see. The Portrait DLC is a very tiny part of the Premium Edition and I don’t think they care much about it.
But you can always still manually install a Mod if they don’t allow it on their platform.
You could just mod them in yourself for personal use and not release the mod publicly. If anyone knows how to do it that’d be useful, as I want to mod a couple of the beta portraits back in.
Anyone able to point me in the right direction as to how to do this? I have the legacy dlc and want to experiment with chopping and changing individual god portraits so I can have a mix of all I consider to be my favourite ones
I saw them removing mods for AoE 3 where someone tried to sneak DLC civs into the game as data mods, so yep.
A whole civilisation is a little more then just a few PNGs.
It also seems like you will not be able to buy this DLC individually and it’s just a bonus for the Premium Edition.
What? No, it’s a separate DLC sold for 6 bucks.

That’s precisely my concern. I’d have gladly paid like 2 bucks for the DLC, begrudgingly (as I think this should have been the default), but 6 bucks is just too much. It’s not even about the price itself, but the gall to do it, and what it says about their intentions. I’m expecting future DLC to cost as much as the base game.
