Exciting, but I wish it would also let us keep more of the blessings we earn permanently, as a choice for starter blessing when starting a new run.

Yes, we can. Play Heavenly Spear and the New Gauntlet in Age of Mythology: Retold - Age of Empires - World’s Edge Studio If you read the article here, it clearly states;

Eternal Blessings can be unlocked in Arena of the Gods Story Mode. Eternal Blessings are also acquired after completing the Boss Node and will be yours to add to your pool of choices for all subsequent runs.

There’s only one eternal blessing as of current that isn’t a hero that I have been able to find. I wish there were more.
