Are developers heeding our feedback?

I’ve seen plenty of games that received bad feedback when revealed when succeeded.

I don’t understand the last part of that sentence

Really? In that case, we should have a great, successful game cause the only things I see people complaining about are graphics, animations, and scaling

Made up number and no proof. In fact, the ratio is in favor of Aoe4, lol

That’s what he was saying. The ratio he is describing in the like dislike ratio from the aoe4 trailer on IGN.

I misread, yes. Lol

I mean look around all the youtube videos, forums and reviews. We can each time clearly see and track down what people did dislike by RTS games.

So why can’t people, whose job depends on it, realize to work on a product that is going to fail on the games market? Especially if it did occur by similar titles, that had similar graphics and ideas.

let me pick one example Empire Earth III from year 2007. And here is one article written by an actual games journalist back in 2007.

Empire Earth III Review
While it may be a lot smoother and simpler than its predecessors, Empire Earth III has been dumbed down to the point of irrelevance.
By Brett Todd on November 16, 2007 at 5:34PM PST

Be careful what you wish for. A lot of RTS gamers have been clamoring for a simplified Empire Earth over the past couple of years, finding the first two releases in the series to be a mess of units and eras as incomprehensible as a history textbook after it’s been fished out of a blender. So, welcome to Empire Earth III, a shot back at the critics that answers complaints by dumbing the whole game down to utter dreck. While the first two games in the series at least inspired love or hate, this new arrival is so “blah” that it can only elicit a lot of “What the hell happened here?” shrugs.

it also simplifies things too much

Still, the design is more misguided than flat-out awful. Developer Mad Doc Software probably started from a good place, working with the sensible idea that a lot of the messy cross-epoch elements needed to be stripped away for the franchise to truly compete with the likes of its Rise of Nations and Age of Empires rivals.

Artificial intelligence provides little challenge in these engagements.

The developer’s questionable sense of taste and humor is also on display in the visuals and sound. The overall graphic design of the game leans toward the cartoonish, with a brightly colored palette that often renders units in pastel hues more appropriate for a teen girl’s bedroom décor than an army’s.

Aoe4 has more people praising the game than hating on it. Imo, that makes it look like it will succeed.
Also that last picture looks disgusting. If you were trying to say it looks like Aoe4, you are mistaken

off topic: but I would like an empire earth 1 remaster.

and yes clearly people are in favor of Aoe4.

Honestly an updated preview would be nice to show off the newer improvements they made but at the same time i would probably wait till beta released so its closer to final visual product

actually age IV has roghly 10 to 1, at least for the gameplay trailer of 5 mins:

that is QUITE good for a very specific title, I think.

the last critique sentence actually doesnt fit the shot you shared at all imo. These units dont look cartoony, the look strong and well. not realistic maybe, but very well made. you see the armor and shields and as you see them you can feel how well they work.

Also the rest of the qoutes also shows a very…special type of journalism

However regarding your general question - if “most” RTS players dislike specific traits of RTS games which then flop, I am sure that other devs will learn from that However if the failure was caused by something different, then they wont see the comments as a reason.

I am sure that they know what they do, and they did haave their questionaires between age players before choosing the art style they are going for.

Moste age players are probably in for the graphics and the building and RTS aspect, aswell as nice historic campaigns to learn about history. Not many are probably in because of a realistic protrait of such

Allow me to tell you the tragedy of Empire Earth III.
here is a good video to explain it.
Just watch it and compare some screenshots of AoE4 to EE3.

I am afraid, based on the interviews and what we have seen so far,
AoE4 has exactly the same design philosophy alike Empire Earth 3.

Yes there is evidence. I’m not sure if I can post links but I’ll tell you how to find the proof.

The YouTuber Ausie Drongo on April 21st this year posted a video recapping the words of Adam Isgreen who is apart of Age 4 development. This video discusses issues like arrow and sword sizes, the size of buildings, and if the game will be a mobile game or not.

Basically yes, they know all about it. Game developers see the big reddit posts and forum posts, they hear out the community leaders on places like Twitch and YouTube often. They just don’t speak directly to the community because 9.5 times out of 10 it turns into a fight and a negative experience for the devs and community as a whole.

They’re listening and we should have a little faith in the development process. They hear us out and only time will tell.

Thank you for that.

And yes, it gives also Text reports from Adam Isgreen about the overproportionate weapons and the cartoon style of the units. You can find something on Google, you just have to search for them specifically.

Having trust alone is of no use. The community has to bring her points into the field, because only then can you hope, that something may be changed in your sense. And she has done this enough for the past few weeks. But I doubt, if that is enough. It is now up to the developers, which way they want to go.

When have they said that Age IV will be a simplification of the previous Age games? (like Empire Earth III did from the previous games)

I have no time to watch this video, and I am actually not concerned if age 4 will be a success, but let me tell you, you are right regarding the graphic stye of these 2 games. The shots you picked, If age didnt look a lot brighter (which is good imo) could be from the same game :open_mouth:

BUT we know they already worked on skaling, so the units wont be AS present.

I am particulary stunned by the wall/tower visuals, they look SO similar :open_mouth: but then again, its the same timeframe, so there is a certain architectural style.

And you can see in the shots that age 4 is FAR more detailed (as it should be years afte rthat game)

Yes, they clearly are working on the game, but does it go in the right direction?

Let’s take another look at the official statements.

Age of Empires IV wants to appeal to both casual and hardcore players
We had to really give it a little more sophistication and more depth in terms of colour. For me, it was really about bringing in a broader audience. We wanted to open it up so that it was easier to read the battlefield, it’s a lot more fun to build.

To your point about new beginner newbies or casual players, Relic really creates a first-time user experience to bring players like that because we’re going to bring in a whole bunch of new people through Xbox Game Pass. We want to make sure they get the tutorials, the Art of Wars; the mission is to really understand RTS because sometimes it can be a cognitive load.

well to me, they do. Already. now tehy said arrows arent that huge anymore and scaling edited, so Im quite positve regarding their improvements

Ok the best devs can do is listen to criticism and the community. JUst some examples:
AoE1 DE
AoE 2 DE
AoE 3 DE

Not a game but the same result: Sonic the movie.

As an age insider who played and collaborated in all the DE beta versions, everything I pointed out in the forums was corrected. In AoE 3 we had a similar issue with the graphics. SOmehow the units looked dead in the first builds. Then there was a lack of details on the units that made it so hard to find them in those well detailed terrain props and trees. SOme sounds were so annoying and out of place. Etc.

Fortunately they listened to all the feedback we brought and now we have a gem of a game. AoE 1,2 and 3 are amazingly well done and that is thanks to the feedback and love from the same community.

We are not saying the only thing that matter is graphics, no, we are saying what they showed us is taking the wrong path. AoE players dont want cartonnish unfinished units and dumb physics and animations. We like to see realistic battles that make the fun gameplay a joy to the eyes.

SOmeone already did a callout on what happened with DoW 3. Go watch the gameplay and see how many people are complaining about it. Someone in Relic is not doing a good job, and I hope they take the right decisions to avoid committing the same mistakes…

I hope once they throw the Beta we can have a better chance to taste it and see if it’s going to be worth it. They will probably listen to our feedback once the beta is launched.

In my case I have wasted a lot of time making many posts with my own feedback and opinions and hope it gets listened and considered.

I did not notice it was EE 3 until I saw the name on it. The graphics almost look the same, when you have dumb physics, dead animations, lack of details and cartoonish units tahts exactly what happens… I see good polygons and textures but a big gap in the previously mentioned features…

Thats why we are giving our feedback and the reason we all want to be listened. We are all afraid of one big deception as EE3 and DoW 3. Hope it does not happen with AoE 4
