It is 10 hits vs 12 hits and since Knight attacks 11% faster, you should consider DPS vs DPS. Camel effectively does 6 DPS vs Knight. Knight does 5.55 DPS to Camel. That is very marginal. But of course this snowballs in large numbers, especially in large numbers when cheaper cost and faster tt of camel also comes into play.
60 gold is way too much for generic camels. Swap 10 gold cost for an additional food cost, at least. Their dealing no bonus damage to elephant armor class is also questionable.
I do not understand also why those camels do not deal more damage to these damn elephants.
If camels counter only cavalry and if they are weak against everything else, including archers, infantry, buildings, elephants just make them a trash unit 100 food 0 gold.
melee elephants are already bad, especially Persian ones. nerfing them further with camels makes no sense
Persian elephants deserve some special conditions vs Camels as a UU. Generic elephants should take more damage vs camels.
Its still worth training. They are cheaper, faster and can kill knight + skirm combos. For most civs they are meant to be support units and not a primary army.
camel + skirm is a cheaper combo. If its the other way around you’ll be paying more to get less worthy units.
Heavy camels in equal numbers will comfortably win against Paladin. And a paladin upgrade costs 2000+ resources while heavy camel costs <1000. Wouldn’t be fair if they were more effective.
All the arguments you mention look like a description of trash units :
- Low def
- Weak against buildings
- Weak against all kind of infantry
- Weak against elephants
- Weak against archers
- Not doing very well vs Mangudai and Camel archers
In summary they are weak against all gold units of the game except cavalry.
Im not telling Camels should be OP, I am telling that they need some rework.I’ll be fine if they would be slightly worst against cavalry in exchange they could deal better against other units in general and bonus cavalry apply vs elephants (except UU Persians).
But camel civs winrate has improved since DE due to more dominance of cavalry. I would rather prefer skirmisher dealing a bit extra damage against elephants.
They do better than most units do, like only mass skirms, mass SO and some unique units do better than camels in this situation.
I find castle age camels a bit underwhelming, especially in lower numbers but once they’re 20+ and the upgrades start kicking in, they’re a great unit. I don’t think they should be changed because a lot of cavalry heavy civs like Huns, Persians, Tatars, Turks, Mongols already struggle against good camel civs like Byzantines, Gurjaras and Hindustanis
Aren’t their pikes, foot archers, or even militia lines enough to handle these camels?
Sure but then they play with much less than ideal comp and all three camel civs I mentioned have very good options against those
