Are massed hetairoi still good against buildings?

Poseidon is my favorite major god and I’ve always loved how his hetairoi/centaur combination allows you to unleash a tidal wave of destruction across the map without siege engines to slow you down. But is this still a viable strategy in retold? I have used it successfully in multiplayer, but I’m now wondering if maybe I got lucky because I’ve since learned that hetairoi no longer have a multiplyer against buildings. Does their AoE attack still work against buildings in sufficient numbers?

AoE doesn’t really help against buildings at all because they rarely stand close enough for you to damage multiple of them.

I haven’t exactly tested them numerically, but if a unit has high DPS, it works against buildings even if it doesn’t have multiplier or crash damage. But as far as I understand, the point of Hetairos is precisely their advantage against infantry—they have low DPS, but their AoE compensates for it. So no, they’re not very effective against buildings unless you use the Hephaestus upgrade and spam them in large numbers.

If you are comparing to how old hetairoi would do, then no.

Any melee unit can take down Buildings if you have enough. That said, hipp would do better since they have higher damage and the hetairoi aoe doesnt matter vs Buildings.

Mass hetairoi is still good to do either way imo.

That seems like a real shitty change. The whole point of Poseidon is that he can crush enemies with a fast army of cavalry and centaurs without needing slow seige units. He’s like the AoM equivalent of the Huns from AoE2. If he can’t do that anymore, what’s even the point?

Fair, each have their own taste. Tbh Hetairoi + centaur combo was never a viable thing, so you coudls till play with it.

Cant really rememeber some high level game of that being an army comp. Hetairoi usually side raided since hippeus were stronger in fights.

Now you do fight with mass hetairoi and use the goos siege options greek has for the other part.

Why weren’t they a viable combo? Heavy cav+cav archer combos are usually lethal.

In the old game MU didnt scale as they do on Retold, so classic age units where not worth your while in mythic and you could deal with centaur as most civs very well on mythic age. I doubt you can find a game from AoT where centaur + hetairoi was a comp at any high level game.

Hetairoi wasent a heavy cav, it was worse than hippeus fighting, its edge was the building bonus.

I suppose it isn’t really realistic to have a building destroying cavalry. The cavalry rush is more about raiding their economy until they’re forced to resign.
