Given to a civ that is the most one dimensional with a little eco bonus. Make champion stronger without a cost rise and see how Slavs with one of the best eco and very good Champion dominates everything.
And you will be creating a problem by buffing militia line. So I have to think about the problem that doesn’t exist now but will exist after the buffing.
The steam rolling buildings part is the hard one to balance tbh.
Extra speed also means they are better against knight and siege in mass battle as they can be faster to find next target. But with heavier armor, swordsman shouldn’t be faster or vice versa. At most, they can on par with spear in speed and get +1PA for free(remove gambeson)
Not so much against Knight. Cumans and Celts 5% extra speed doesn’t always results in better performance. However, if you run a big number of tests, they will perform better more times than generic. Will be definitely better against siege though. And I think that is fine. I do wish they were better against siege.
As I said, HP is still same as other 2 barracks units. So I don’t really think they are a “Heavy Infantry”.
They should have been better against everything else
They neither deal huge damage against any generic unit nor tank damage as melee unit. They don’t deal significant damage against knight/xbow like camels/pikes/mangonels. They can be simply picked off by few ranged/siege units (unharm kiting) while knight need double number.
A common complaint of mine is elephants are counterable by pretty much everything, but even then I’ve never seen people counter elephants with the Militia line
Elephant can be devasting when massed. Slow but devasting and raze opponents base. I think militia shouldn’t fill this role but elephants and rams.
If they are more resistant to mangonel shot, they can be at least a better partner with xbow and scorpion.
Besides, the strength of LS rush isn’t really greater than xbow/knight rush. The timing should be faster and the cost of failure should be more forgiving.
I disagreed with making scorpions weak vs militia before. But now ballistic scorpions doing good vs CA. It is time to make militia strong vs all siege except gunpowder siege. All civs have access to either arbalest/HCA/HC to counter militia. Bulgarians have their strong militia. Only concern will be Celts.
Before ballistic affect scorpions, someone proposed to make militia-line strong vs both scorpiond and onagers. But this might make scorpions too niche and only counter xbow. But now scorpions are good vs CA. I find no reason to disagree making militia-line strong vs scorpions.
This balance was found by game dynamics, in absolute terms it makes no sense, but at least it has a shield.
As to why the militia line should have the same pierce armour as a huskarl or an eagle warrior against scorpions remains a mystery. But even if he had the same armour as a serjeant it would be strange to see.
