I suggest to add the japanese peasant spear infantry Ashigaru - as a unique unit. Ashigaru - Wikipedia
Just reskinning the Spearman line would be a better alternative.
In fact, the medieval Japanese were so visually dustinct, that they need theur own individual skin pack.

Honestly due to the orientatal looking round hats the spearman is the one unit that looks non European at a glance

Ashigaru, in addition to fighting, could also extract resources and have a combat bonus after reaching a number of soldiers of this unit close to each other thanks to better morale.
how were ashigaru different from peasant levies in other countries?
“extract resources” - most soldiers in medieval armies would do productive stuff when not at war and usually also forage for resources and collect wood when at war. so why should only one unit get this ability?
“combat bonus due to better morale” - again, how is this something unique to japanese peasants?
Japanese are in a great place in the current balance, why risk this by overhauling a core unit of their roster?

Because one unique unit for such important faction is not enough.
What makes them so important? A lot of important civs have 1 UU. Like Franks or Teutons or Malians the richest people to ever exist

I also once proposed a unique Korean unit to recruit in the castle.

Koreans already have 2 unique units and 2 regional units. that’s more than enough

The Japanese were extremely isolated and did not interact with anyone else in any significant way until towards the end of the timeline.

I feel a special fishing ship would work. Japanese and actually some other coastal Orientals and also Andean lake civs had cormorant birds they trained to help with fishing. Regional fishing ship of some sort?

The spearman model literally looks like an Ashigaru…
Just make the mounted samurai and ninja unique units for them.No need to add anything else.
What if the Samurai (reg and elite) replace Two Handed Swordsmen and Champions, Mounted Samurai replace Knights and Cavaliers, and the Ninja becomes the Castle UU? With stat adjustments if necessary.
Ninja were not a battlefield unit. They are represented with the spies tech.

Well, ok, ninjas are up for debate. But I do believe mounted samurai should replace the knight line. Like Hei Guang.
so what purpose would this unit serve? Its cavalry for a civ with melee cav that falls off a cliff after Castle Age?
