Attack Move Unintuitive

  • Game Version: v100.17.36100.0 (494852R)

  • Build Number: 15978079 (Steam Build ID)

  • Platform: Steam

  • Operating System: Windows 11

Issue:

These might not be bugs per se, but I just find this unintuitive and have seen other players struggle with this as well, so decided to post.

  1. Attack move sometimes makes your units move the opposite direction of where you clicked if enemy already present on the screen.
  2. Attack move cannot be used with shift clicking, i.e. you cannot shift-click a movement path and end it with attack move.

You can see high-level players struggle with this as well, e.g. here, you can see Boit dumbfounded, losing more than half of his cav : https://youtu.be/c-YKYH8V1NA?si=MTKRnBo7bSu96yRl&t=790.

I think what most players expect with attack move is: move in this direction; if you come across any enemies in your path, engage. However, if you attack move and there are any enemy units or buildings in the opposite direction of where you indicated, your units will run backwards and engage.

Worst case you will loose units to a fight you didn’t want them take. Or they will engage with trivial stuff like granaries or wall fragments and just losing time. Let’s say you raid a gold mine, the enemy vills scram and you attack move after them, if you didn’t destroy the gather point your units won’t chase after the vills but turn back to engage with the gold drop of point.

All in all this seems doubly unintuitive to me, because units go the opposite direction of where indicated and because if there are opponent’s units/buildings behind me when I initiate the manoeuvre it means they were already on my screen, so I chose to ignore them.

Trigger Event:

Attack move when there are enemy units/buildings opposite of the indicated direction.

Regarding shift-click not working with attack move:

Alt-right-click also does attack move. Alt-right-click once, then shift-right-click as needed, and you will create an attack move path. Alt-right-clicking on the minimap (and alt-right-clicking followed by shift-right-clicking) also works.
