Auto kiting

Greetings everyone

Before I start, I’d like to state that I am a casual player who mainly plays single player with the occasional quick match. I don’t have the point of view of a competitive player. So, here goes:

I had the idea of giving ranged units auto kiting, which can be toggled on and off (If I’m not mistaken, in AoE2 the skirmishers have that). The reason is that I feel like the player who deploys ranged units against slower armored melee units is at a disadvantage. The player with the ranged unit has to intensively micro his units to unleash their full potential, which is their superior speed. This is especially the case with mounted archers. Meanwhile, the player with the armored melee units has to do one click to attack, that’s it.

I have no idea how this messes with the game balance. Maybe it is nonsense. But I feel like for casual players, low level players and beginners this would be a great improvement, because the awareness of the importance of kiting is underdeveloped and manual kiting feels like babysitting. This is a problem, because as far as I can tell, making use of the superior movement speed of your units is a core game element. Especially when you have to face Men-at-Arms in feudal age, kiting them with archers is your only proper counter! I feel like this topic is not properly taught in the tutorials.

Maybe for balancing purposes it would help, if auto kiting is kept simple: The units shall move only while reloading (with nice reloading animations would be my dream :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:) and shoot as soon as they are ready. This way, manual kiting is still better and thus rewarded, because during this form of auto kiting, the pursuing units will still land the occasional hit.

Cheers!
