Aztecs, why is everything so bad?

After watching screenshots from the future add-on, I became very disappointed with the developers. The main problem is the choice of mythical units, such as rabbits, scorpions, owls, two-headed snakes, and jaguar riders. It is strange that the developers could not find more worthy and interesting creatures, when there are options available. Some of the creatures look pathetic, while others were created by the developers to make something out of nothing. The visual of the eagle warriors is also disappointing, as they do not resemble eagles at all. In general, everything looks tasteless.

If the jaguar rider is a cihuateteo, then I think the only concept that truly demonstrates a lack of imagination and utter absurdity is the armadillo. At least the owl is a tlacatecolotl.

Again you’re throwing a tantrum because either your fever dream didn’t come true or didn’t get your way

The game is not out yet. They did not show all the myth units. On top of that, we do not know if units shown in screenshots are myth units, GPs or scenario exclusive units. How can you make that claim?

Then name those worthy and interesting creatures instead of just complaining?

Here’s a a few lists of Mythological creatures from Atzec mythology, ironically many of them are already featured from what we saw lol

So which ones, the ones that you deemed worthy and interesting, from those lists you want in the game?

I think he’s referring to Xiuhcoatl, who is conspicuously absent and possibly the most impressive creature in Aztec mythology. Other absentees would be Tzinacan (Camazotz in Mayan) or the chaneques; instead, they showed an armadillo. I think their indignation is justified. It seems there’s a consensus that they’ll likely release more content over the coming weeks, so we shouldn’t lose hope.

Aztec mythology has the same issue with Egyptian mythology. There are not a lot of mythological creatures recorded in texts, art, nor beastiaries to choose from so the devs took creative liberties in regards to the Egyptian Pantheon and made up their own myth units inspired on real myths. Avengers, Anubites, Scorpion Men, and Petsosuhus are those examples. The same logic may be applied to the Aztec pantheon as well.

You nailed it. Everyone should wait until everything is released before complaining. But I guess he is worried and wants to let the devs know before it is too late. The release date has already been known so I think it is already too late for the devs to change things now.

I can definitely see the Xiuhcoatl in the game either as a unit or a god power. Chaneques would be nice and the Tzinacantecuhtli could be Mictlāntēcutli’s own personal myth units.

@TuxedoToad I find it super weird that the TC, @Gh0stJaguar , would just make a complaint thread but then not really specify or even attempt to give everyone his ideal mythical unit choices. Also weird is how the game isn’t even out yet so we don’t really know the full list.

I think the devs should really look into the Book of the Dead for more inspiration. Duat has a ton of gate monstrosities they can pull from, some of which have really cool names too.

If not the gate monsters then MUs like the Serpopard and Akhekh are fan favorites imo.

Theres a chance they might appear when we get a 4th Egyptian major god

What’s so strange? We can already see almost the full set from the screenshots. It is clear that there are people who are always satisfied with everything, even give you pink robots, you will be happy, then what else can I talk to you about?)) The examples have already been sent to you, I’ll add them from me Tlacazinacantli.

Or with the Leviathan (which is a Biblical representation of Satan) being an Egyptian myth unit. I wouldn’t be surprised if one or two things from Mayan or maaaaybe (this one is a stretch) Puebloan mythology show up under the Aztec umbrella in a similar vein. Puebloan I mainly say because it sounds like the focus of the DLC is before and during the Nahua people’s migration to the valley of Mexico from the north (IRL probably not that far north, but its still possible they do it).

Theres also Behemoth thats based on hebrew mythology and is represented in the Atlantean pantheon

Adding pink robots would be a HORRIBLE idea.

The mythical armadillo unit was praised by many on the official discord channel when it was revealed yesterday.

Tlacazinacantli? Isn’t that a full fledged deity or something? Can you name some more? This is your topic afterall.

Do you understand or not that the armadillo is not a mythical creature? The fact that it is mentioned by the Aztecs, like the fish or the monkeys, does not make it a special creature. The fact that a small number of people like this joke does not make it an authoritative or representative choice. There are many people who do not like this option. Tlacazinacantli is a deity, but we could add a giant bat that would fit into this pantheon. Unlike armadillos, they already had a mythical role as inhabitants of the underworld. I’m not a fan, but you could add Coatlicue’s avatars, which is also one of the goddesses. It’s a clichĂ©, but you could add a giant jaguar or a panther, which would look more appropriate, unlike the jaguar riders, who look silly and out of place. Speaking of jaguars, Tepeyollotl, the god of mountains and caves, is a giant jaguar, and his avatars could easily be large cats.

Regardless of how it’s received, I find it ridiculous that they think they can portray such a common animal as the armadillo as a mythological being. It’s not even particularly symbolic in their culture, and their justification was that the Spanish conquistadors considered it strange. Furthermore, I don’t understand how a primarily insectivorous animal could attack other units, other than transmitting leprosy.

Ghostjaguar and @toaf I understand your point. But at this stage there isn’t a thing that the fans can do to change and revert that choice. The Aztecs are going to be released soon. I still believe that we haven’t seen all of the MUs yet.

To be fair, the jaguar riders or specifically the jaguar themselves are actually large. Jaguars aren’t really meant to be “ridden” by adults anyway. Those jaguars have to be larger than those found in real life. But I assume you meant even larger ones than that.

By the way, Xiuhcoatl is probably in the game. Huitzilopotchli is actually wielding it on the cover art. Now whether or not it can be “playable” remains to be seen.

I don’t know too much about this Tlacazinacantli. Is it a bat deity or a bat monster from the Aztec mythology? Regardless, I think it would be a great choice if they were in the game. Though I think it should be large and terrifying looking with a myth-makeover.

I don’t think your point on the armadillo stands, unless you have the same objection to the Scarab for the Egyptians (which, if you do, fair enough, your opinion and all). Much like the Scarab, the armadillo doesn’t play a specific key role in Aztec Mythology but instead has a more generic, revered position in the broader Nahuatl culture. There IS regular Mesoamerican art depicting the armadillo, it’s shell and meat were bore common and symbolic usages and it was an animal that the Aztecs considered culturally important. This is similar to the scarab of ancient Egypt which got itself a myth unit because of that significance to their culture.

At the end of the day, there are a lot of pseudo-Mesoamerican historians all of a sudden popping up here (as evidenced by the amount of people giving their opinion for the human sacrifice element of Aztec society). The actual reality of Aztec mythology if one takes their time to read peer-reviewed thesis and books on Mesoamerica is that their religion is poorly understood - there are even conflicting stories of their creation origin. Mesoamerican religion and mythology is fundamentally poorly understood and there is an inherent lack of verified, known mythological creatures that pantheons such as Greek, Chinese and Norse provide in spades, so the devs are going to have to take creative licenses. This is certainly NOT to say there aren’t known verified mythological creatures of their mythology known to us, of course we do, but not to the same extent and perhaps not to the dev team without basically replicating myth units already in the game; there’s a surprising amount of crossover among many religions and their mythologies regarding supernatural creatures (look at dragons). But the devs taking a few licenses such as making an animal that was culturally significant (majorally, perhaps not, but still appears frequently enough in art) and turning that into a representation myth unit of Aztec mythology, much like the scarab.

As for the argument regarding more authentic myth units (as per done for the Chinese and Japanese, rather than generic which was done more for the Egyptians), it’s an argument I have no stake in - I just want a fun game that does a good job at introducing folk to new cultures.

And as for the Jaguar-riders
well, let’s just see what it is first before jumpy to hasty conclusions!

So, it’s a cav unit. Probably created to have at least one cav unit. I am fine with that. Jaguars are sacred in their society, so why not have the priestesses ride them into battle.
