Yeah i think adding a 3rd landmark to every civ and to every age, would have been a good way to implement variants.
But im fine with the current system as well.
I wouldn’t be against that as long as I don’t have to build 3 landmarks for a dynasty as Chinese…
Since it’s “ZXL”, why is the image of a Shaolin monk used in the picture? Can’t Devs be replaced with other character images? Perhaps Devs believes that players outside of China only have a deep impression of Chinese Kung Fu or Shaolin, which can help increase DLC’s sales. This is a stereotype and a result of China’s insufficient cultural output to the outside world.
Of course not, that would need to be to get 2/3 landmark.

This whole variant civ idea looks like a detached solution to the community’s request for more civs. I’m really tired of thinking about this topic myself, at this point I don’t know if anything can be changed, probably not. guess I’ll stay away from AOE4 news for a while.
I’m copying my own comment below, these are my thoughts:
I have a feeling the variants are solving a problem that doesn’t exist while harming the game in the long run… We already have 10 civs, plus the 2 new we’ll have 12. Considering how different the civs are from each other, 12 is actually a lot, the devs have been doing a great job balancing them so far considering how asymmetric they are.
I get it people constantly ask for new civs but that only means that’s what people are most passionate about, that doesn’t mean it’s the most urgent change needed for the game. I’d rather they rework the original civs instead of making a copy of the existing ones then struggle even coming up with proper names for them. Also, of course keep making new and unique civs, slowly, I wouldn’t mind waiting. Having poorly executed new civ ideas only harms the passion for a lot of people. What I also wanted to see is more maps and more bioms, much more than what has been revealed, maybe a more customisable mega random too, maybe even new map mechanics like treasures, villages you can capture etc… Also more game modes too, like an official Regicide mode instead of just a mod.
Another really big issue with the game IMO is it can’t retain PVE players. Call them second-class citizens all you like but they bring a lot of income too. I’d play a lot more too if we have more pve options. I was really hoping this DLC fills this void but then I got surprised by the variants.
I wish it was the one of the actual dynasties of china rather then this weak civilization design.
It just goes to show that this sultans ascend expansion was a mish-mash and quickly throwed together product with no major themes.
I agree with all your naming suggestions. Also, I think giving them all the Chinese units earlier just undercuts the current Chinese. They have everything China has except earlier. I know it will be balanced for competitive gameplay, but it won’t be balanced for coolness.

The variant civilization still needs to be renamed, preferably by community voting.
