chinese’s civ bonus on tech discount randomly breaks spies technology. at random times once researched, it’ll take away the gold cost (between 200 gold and 30k gold) PLUS some more gold depending on how many enemy vills/trade units are there, while not revealing enemies.

Here’s the steps to reproduce the issue:

  1. play a game as chinese
  2. with AI, lots of units on map
  3. research spies, seldomly it’ll not work while taking away your gold
