The Battle of Greece DLC was one of the best DLC ever.
One of my favorite things about it was the amount of tech icons added. It allows custom scenarios or mods to have lots of variety by reusing those icons without conflicts with normal icons that are used in normal gameplay.
Given that we don’t have the ability to add our own icons that would work in multiplayer lobbies.
This is more of a request to the devs. Please include as many units, buildings, and technology icons as possible. It will help with diversity in custom scenarios, mods, and custom content.
This will make the game better not only for the campaign players who will have those new icons in the campaigns but also for players who are going to play custom content.
I actually expected more replacements for existing icons with Alexander, but the only changed icon (when not counting the new Siege reskins) appears to be that of the Mouflon. Although about a dozen unique campaign-only tech icons were added.
Here are some I would like to see changed.
Drums
I’m puzzled that this one still uses the Dry Dock icon. No drums, rowers, or oars to be seen. In AoE2, this used to represent the increased capacity of Transport Ships, which has never been dependent on a Dock/Port tech in Chronicles.
Barracks
Instead of medieval swords, one of the Barracks icons from RoR could be used, like the Greek variant below. It would still be easily recognisable as Barracks.
Greek Army/Commander Tent
The Army Tents introduced in Rise of the Rajas look very different from the Greek Army and Commander Tents. The RoR Army Tent icon would be more appropriate. In fact, the Chronicles buildings appear to be derived from the RoR ones.
Parthian Tactics
This icon shows a Heavy Cavalry Rider of the base game. Why not change it to the Chronicles version, or an actual Parthian horse archer.
The Huns were the ones to introduce stirrups to the Romans so it’s centuries after Chronicles. Before stirrups, they made saddles raised at the front and back to give more support to the rider.
But if you ride horses without stirrups, insurances companies will scream about the extra risk for actors and extras so it’s one point where we have to bite the bullet and sacrifice a bit of historical accuracy… we know not having them would be more accurate, we know you know, but we couldn’t legally do it without them
Fishing Ship
The unit uses the AoE2 icon despite having a distinct appearance. While the sail is essentially the same as the base game version’s, it otherwise resembles the AoE1 Fishing Ship.
Town Center
This one always had a distinct icon, but for some reason, the male Villager is still bearded and bare-chested like the base game version. Or a “preview” of the male Villager skin the “barbarians” of Western and Central Europe will use?
