Just want to get a simple suggestion out there regarding graphics of the cliffs.
The cliff tile should be modified in some way to reflect the terrain type it covers - either with strategically placed transparency regions on the sprite - but preferably just making more cliff graphics and switching between.
One of the biggest eye soars in original and aoeii has always been the cliffs. This is probably due to their job of breaking the isometric perspective and tricking us into seeing height, all the while being compatible with a range of terrain types (hence why brown was chosen as a general colour I would assume, as it goes wellish with the whole colour palette)
long story short:
Cliffs graphics should somehow reflect the terrain they occupy, improving general immersion, graphics
Best part is such a change wont affect the original gameplay at all.

** EDIT ** - yes the current remastered cliffs look great - and I’ve noticed they’ve gone for gray instead of the original brown. I just think they can be made even better with the above suggestion.
Multiple types would be a nice addition if they can do it. You’d need to consider map generations too as cliffs can run over grass and desert and water. Given they are tiles, if cliffs could mix on the same line, you’d need to specify join tiles to be used only when two different types mix. Otherwise, a cliff will only be of one type so as to not cause a straight line join that looks like a glitch

Yea I agree - unless they had some sort of blending going on between the cliff tiles - individual cliff sprites might not work well. Although a transparency approach wouldn’t have this same problem.
Take a little thinking, but blended cliff types would also be possible and remove the crease artefact you rightly point out.
I hope they are moddable alongside the other graphics in the game. For AoE2HD, the Steam workshop has beautiful mods for cliffs too.
