Cosmetics, for a price

Will in-game cosmetics ever be available through buying them? I really want the Lakota warchief skins, but I have work and school and really don’t have the time or continually available free time to grind out the missions for them.

Frankly, I’d rather be able to just buy them at some point.

Devs, will y’all ever make the cosmetics buyable?

I think this is a good idea for the long term profits of the game.

I think they might be waiting to roll it out until all the civs have explorer skins available.

Let’s see what happens around October being the 2-year anniversary month and all.

Same.

I’d rather do anniversary challenges and get all the previous unlocks than paying for each one of them.

I full agree as well and have suggested this before. The game simply feels “incomplete” to me if I don’t have access to all the cosmetics.

Some skins could be unlocked via challenges, points by MP, and some others could be cosmetic DLCs. I’m not against the business model that doesn’t affect gameplay.

I mean, I’m certainly not against paying for stuff if the profits go towards supporting the game. Monetizing stuff like this can be a slippery slope which is why it needs to be done respectfully and games like this aren’t geared towards it, especially when patches give us this stuff for free. I do feel for the people that simply don’t have the time for it though.

I don’t fully oppose the idea of selling skins, but I’m against selling the ones who got released already with the DLCs, would prefer having new ones which aren’t related to challenges (the ones who are proposed in one of the threads here).

However I can understand those who didn’t had the chance of getting the old ones, as I’ve missed all pre-Halloween event ones, hence why I keep asking for a long (meant long as an entire month or longer) event that unlocks them all instead of having to pay for all the old ones.

Indeed. An event in October providing all past rewards for those that missed them is what I’m thinking too. Although it still doesn’t help those whose time is limited.

That’s how they want you to feel. No shame in wanting the skins, but don’t let the corporate suits smell any desperation off of you.

I’m not against the idea but if they start putting loads of cosmetics in DLCs and start making them 15-20 bucks. Then that’s bad. It would definitely be cool if somebody wanted one cosmetic and could buy it for like 99 cents or something like that.

What an amazingly horrible idea, yes let’s bring micro transactions to a beloved RTS game. You can go join your friends in the bad idea infested ball pit

It is not a bad idea, as long as it is done with moderation and is only cosmetic…

And therein lies the danger that unscrupulous publishers exploit. They know they can overcharge for “just cosmetic” DLC to satisfy the need for completionism. Thank goodness it’s at least not within a loot box; I’ve seen people spend obscene amounts of money in the hopes they will contain things that are “just cosmetic”.

Besides, even at 99¢, that one 3D model is 1/15th of the price (or 1/10th during a Steam sale) of an expansion that includes new civilizations, units, maps, and game modes. Not a good deal in comparison to the great value of the expansions.

The skins should stay as free unlocks (either temporarily or permanently) or given to all players automatically. A few bucks from exploiting a psychological need for completion isn’t worth the loss of goodwill that the Age of Empires franchise thrives on.

People wanting to buy skins is why moba is so popular today, this doesn’t pair with real-strategy games, even if RTS are the grandfather-in-law for these popular games nowadays. I’m against such model of revenue.
