the game crashes after you buy a village. I have tried several villages but with all of them the game crashes a few seconds after purchase

I’m getting the exact same issue. I’m submitting a bug report now. It happens without fail after the same amount of time when buying any settlement (about 10 seconds). Even if you save just after buying a market, when you load that save the game crashes after the same amount of time. I’ve tried saving up and buying all markets at once but the game crashes before you can win. This currently makes the campaign incompletable.
