Monks are somewhat countered by infantry already, because they are relatively weak and numerous, but what if they actually had a damage bonus against them? Not as much as light cavalry, but like +4? That would mean longswords would kill monks in 3 hits instead of 5. Then, champions could get +6, which means killing in 2 hits instead of 3.
That would mean champions and Longswords could serve as a soft counter to monks, which would really synergize nicely with elephants! Yeah, that’s right, another elephant buff thread.
But yeah, infantry are kind of a universal soft counter, so I really like the idea of making them also a soft counter to monks. Thoughts?
It won’t stop monks from converting the elephants. And both units drain food crazy.

It makes more sense that militia counter pike+onagers more, like militia having bonus dmg for both spearman and siege.

It would after a fashion. Monks can’t convert elephants if they’re dead!
The thing is, infantry synergize BEST with elephants, since only elephants have the durability to survive while the infantry do their damage. But that leaves nothing to deal with the monks!
Letting infantry quickly deal with monks once they reach them would help quite a bit!

You can’t make swordsman counter spearman. In real life, spearman counter swordsman in both group vs group and 1v1.

With a Shield and heavy armor, the poor War Lance (itself difficult to handle and not very mobile) will not give the advantage against the experienced swordsman. The lance unit is strong in pitched battles with little movement, or for protecting strongholds without trying to advance.

Swordsman cannot defeat spearman when in front of them but can exploit the flank of spearmen as spearmen group is not mobile to change the direction.
Swordsman can even defeat spearman without bonus dmg. My suggestion is just to give swordsman a niche role.
