The current Paladin is very French looking so it should stay a French unit.
My suggestion would be the opposite, give everyone else a Paladin replacement (like the Persians).
This would already cover half of the civs that only have 1 UU.
Would that really make sense as europe heavy cavalry is same in weapons armor and tactics?how would a knight in france differ from a knight in spain or HRE?
Only outliers are cumans and huns.Lithuanian paladins are representing polish knights.
The unit doesn’t work the same, it’s relatively short-range to fire into infantry ranks, not a general-purpose long-range siege weapon.
It would be more logical to replace the hand cannoneer, shorter range but causing blast damage.
The Knight and Cavalier stay the same, only the Paladin changes.
Also they are already not the same because of civilisation bonuses anyway.
There aren’t that many Paladins so it wouldn’t be to hard to make every one a little more unique.
Perhaps it can be perceived as “a Fire Ship on land” footman, trainable in Castle (no replacement to other units), which can spit short range also from garrison (e.g. from Castles while defending, and from Rams while attacking):
Isnt this already the case?
If you’re making new UUs they should have something more to offer than just small stats tweaks there and there. As this would already be covered by regional unit skins.
Some civilizations have more unique units than it appears.
The Spanish cannon galleon is a unique unit in practice, even better. Because they don’t take bonus damage from Samurais.
Sicilians, Georgians and Bengalis don’t have two UUs.
