Imo this is one of those German cards that just sucks pretty badly, esp. if you actually play Uhlan heavy. You most likely have Uhlan improvements in the deck, but sadly these cards do not do anything for Totenkopf Hussars. Why would you ever want to use this card? There are little occasions in which this card is actually worth taking. And I say little, because I guess that there are occasions, but I don’t actually see them.
I wish German stat cards would be improved (the age IV skirm card is pathetic). The melee cards only apply to DS and pikes. DS are not great and easy to counter, yet very expensive, so buffing them with cards doesn’t feel smart. And the cav cards also only apply to the two core units (WW/Chevauleger and Uhlan), but there are plenty more units Germany can get. Other civs cards often benefit way more units. It would be great, if German Natives were to be included in the cards. And maybe something for actual German mercenaries, the ones you can build yourself with the Mercenary camp card.
There is no other civ than Germany that gives me such a hard time when choosing cards. I want Landwehr, but the Landwehr card feels like a wasted slot, because it doesn’t do anything except enabling Landwehr, so I don’t take it (why is a card even necessary, just turn CBs into Landwehr with the guard upgrade). Solingen Steel desperately needs a change, because this card makes DS even worse. They become worse with progressing ages anyway, because it becomes easier by age to counter them. Thus it’s a real bad idea to make them even slower. For Chevaulegers you also need a card, but this one at least does a bit more and it feels okay to take it, if you plan on using Chevaulegers. On top of that Chevaulegers benefit from the same cards WWs do, which is great. And why the skirm card only improves health for 1 unit (2 if you took Landwehr) and does nothing else beats me. It gotta be the worst unit upgrade card in the game. An age 4 card that gives 18 hp to the worst royal guard unit in the game (and this card is one of the reasons why it is the worst royal guard unit) is hard to justify to ever be included in a deck. The card also doesn’t even apply to German Native skirm or musket units. It’s such a sad card.
It would be great if the cards were buffed in some way and would include way more units of the German roster. I like the German Native play, but not being able to improve them and still needing many cards to actually make it work doesn’t feel nice. It hurts the German potential for variety, because not playing standard has barely any incentive. I personally don’t like WWs (ugly, clunky, pop inefficient, slow), DS are disappointing, skirms have poor stats despite being royal guard units, Prince Electors not giving the chosen native techs… So I am actually stuck with WWs, Uhlans and skirms (not because you want them, but because you need them). A more interesting and versatile army would be cool for Germany, but aside from WW/Uhlans all units are kinda bad or not improveable. They don’t even have the best mercenaries anymore either, which was THE vanilla identity of this civ.
What I am saying is that I’d love to see card improvements to incentivise a different style of play for Germany, so that a lot of these cards actually feel good instead of just granting style points or minor/useless things that are just worse than the cards for other civs, effectively leading to never wanting to use these cards.
