Elo lost

Hi,
in August 22, half of my ELO was cut. Was that normal? What was the reason?
Since then, I’ve been missing some (!) points without knowing why.

Hi there!

That chart comes from AoE2Insights.com, which tracks your full Microsoft‐server history and graphs it for you (as long as it’s been updated every month or so). If you check there and look at your match breakdown for August - September 2022, you’ll see exactly which games cost you how many points.

I don’t have your gamertag, so I can’t tell you precisely which matches - but most likely you were still doing your ten placement games on the RM 1v1 ladder. Each placement match counts for roughly ±50 Elo, so if you lost most of them, you’d drop around 500 points - and that shows up as “half your Elo” in that chart.

Remember the system is tuned to give each of you about a 50 % win rate: if you start out losing a lot, your rating quickly falls until you’re matched with players you can beat about half the time. That’s why your rating then settled in the 400’s- at that level you’ll win roughly half your games against equally skilled opponents.

To sum it up: That big drop was just the placement system doing its job, not a bug or penalty - nothing to worry about!
