For a victory over an equal opponent I get 18 points, for a victory over someone who is 100 Elo higher than me I get only 21 points, for a victory over a super-weak opponent I get 15 points.
Is there a limit to how much points can be gained/lost?
Their system simply means it’s most profitable to fight weaker opponents. You only get 3 Elo less in a 15-minute match. And you only get 7 more against a stronger opponent.
It works in this game the same way it works in almost any ELO-based matchmaking. I imagine they use TrueSkill - TrueSkill - Wikipedia - or something very close to it here
And yes it rewards consistently beating equal or slightly weaker opponents over getting a single random win against someone much higher ranked, because thats the whole point of this system.
A terrible system and I have uninstalled it for this reason. I kept getting match ups against same people I played with who knew my exact strats so already had forsight for what I will do. Not fun. I will be playing other RTS and maybe might return in a few months from now. but the elo must be worked. If its never fixed I will refuse to come back to this game and go back to the original game.
ELO based systems fall apart when there’s not enough population to represent each bucket.
And when there’s too many you can even find islands of very good players in low ELOs and very bad players in high ELO because they fight each other and keep themselves at that level.
So ELO is far from perfect, but no better system has been created yet.
Which is generally why someone’s ELO is not a good argument in balance talks.
The solution : players should only gain or lose a maximum of 10 Elo points per match. Losing 30 Elo points in one match due to a disconnection or facing troll players is completely unfair, especially when it took you like 5 matches to obtain those valuable 30 Elo points.
That is the whole point of Elo. if some one of higher brackets gets beaten by a lower one then it means he isn’t good enough for it or vice versa. So in Elo there is no limit. This is done to keep games fair. The reason that games are not fair in AoM is that the player base is small. and that even small player base is split.
