ChatGPT offers some fix ideas. Hopefully something in here shines a spotlight or can help? Maybe could also look at AoE support page on the main AoE website for the game and contact support direclty if none of this works or you don’t hear back here:
The issue you’re describing where a patch makes you download a large file (like 8GB) every time, even for smaller updates, is not an uncommon problem for some Steam users. There could be a few potential reasons for this:
1. Game Assets and Patches Are Packaged in Large Files:
-
Age of Empires 2 DE is a game that gets frequent content updates and patches. When the patch is rolled out, rather than just downloading the specific changes, sometimes the patch will repackage large parts of the game (like textures, maps, or models) into a new version. This means you could be downloading large portions of the game again, even though the actual patch itself might be quite small.
-
This is especially common if the patch is large and includes new assets (like new civilizations or campaigns) that need to be installed across the entire game.
2. Steam’s Update System:
-
Steam uses a file compression and patching system that tries to make sure everything stays up to date, and sometimes it doesn’t always work as expected. It’s possible that Steam isn’t detecting that the files have already been updated properly or that it isn’t patching them incrementally, but instead replacing or redownloading large sections of the game.
-
Sometimes, Steam will mistakenly flag older versions of game files and opt to download everything from scratch. This could be the case if Steam’s update system hasn’t properly synced or recognized the most recent patch.
3. Installation Directory Issues or Corruption:
-
If there’s any corruption in your installation, Steam may think that your game files are incomplete or incorrect, causing it to re-download large parts of the game.
-
This could also happen if the game files or cache get corrupted somehow (even with updates), causing Steam to do a full re-download to ensure everything is in sync.
4. Steam Cloud or File Integrity Check:
- Occasionally, Steam might redownload large files if it detects missing or mismatched files when doing its integrity checks. If you’ve moved your installation directory or had issues with your Steam cloud sync, this could cause the game to redownload everything.
Potential Solutions:
-
Verify Integrity of Game Files:
- Go to Steam Library, right-click on Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition, select Properties, go to the Local Files tab, and click Verify Integrity of Game Files. This process will check for missing or corrupted files and only download the necessary ones.
-
Clear Download Cache:
- In Steam, go to Settings > Downloads, and click Clear Download Cache. This can help resolve issues where Steam is incorrectly detecting outdated files.
-
Check for Background Updates:
- If Steam is updating other parts of the system or additional software related to the game (like Microsoft’s server-side updates), that could cause larger downloads. Make sure no other applications or updates are interfering.
-
Reinstall the Game:
- If nothing else works, a clean reinstall could fix the problem. You can try uninstalling Age of Empires II DE and reinstalling it to ensure there is no corruption in the installation.
-
Contact Steam Support:
- If you’re still having trouble, Steam Support may be able to investigate further. Sometimes bugs can arise from specific system configurations.
