Frequently Asked Questions about Age of Empires : Definitive Edition

Q.) I signed up to be an Insider, but have not received my survey.
A.) Check your spam folder. If you registered more than 30 days ago, your spam folder may have been emptied. - Make sure you completed all the steps, created your Microsoft account, choose a name to be known as, verified email, etc.

Q.) I’m an Insider, did the survey, how do I get the beta?
A.) You will receive an email if you are chosen to participate. Otherwise, you will have to wait like the rest of us  Being an Insider/filling out the survey does not guarantee access!

Q.) Will it be on Steam?
A.) At this stage it is only on Windows store. If you have Windows 10, then you already have Windows store on your computer. Ordering the game will be just as easy as it would be on Steam. In fact, by visiting the AoE : DE page, it will open up in Windows Store! Convenient, eh?

Q.) I have Windows 7/8. Can I play this game?
_A.) Currently you NEED Windows 10.
_
Q.) I have an old PC, will it run the DE?
A.) The minimum requirements are still fairly low for today’s standards - check out the minimum requirements here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/store/p/age-of-empires-definitive-edition/9n2kmdvlk85d#system-requirements

Q.) Will it be coming out on XBox One?
_A.) Currently this game is a PC only, Windows 10 exclusive game. It will use the confusing title of “XBox Live” multiplayer system, however it is not available on XBox. Go figure… _

Q.) I was chosen from the beta, but I am having trouble downloading/message of the day etc.
A.) Please ask your questions in the dedicated beta forums, or ask an admin/mod for who to contact. Do Not post things about the beta in the public forums! (I cannot link the beta forum link, because I don’t know it, and wouldn’t be allowed to share it anyway)

Q.) Can I share beta info, post video, screenshots, talk about issues?
A.) You are NOT allowed to share anything related to the beta except in the DEDICATED beta forums. The only things you may discuss on public forums is what has been officially released. You signed a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) when signing up for beta access, and you need to abide by it, or face a ban from both the beta and the forums. If you are unsure, ask a mod/admin for where to post issues/where the beta forum is.

__Q.) I found some leaked beta footage, check it out!
A.) Do NOT share any leaked footage, or you will be banned from the forums! Even if it is not your footage. If you wish to report any footage, you’ll need to contact an admin/mod.

Q.) Will there be unique units, farm auto-reseed, gates, castles, new civs?
A.) Currently there are no plans for new units or new civs. This is not AoE II, so there will not be gates or castles! However, it appears that farms will be walkable, as tested at GamesCon. Building farms will still require you to command “Build + Farm” (B + F). You can hold shift to place multiple farms without having to command B+F each time.

Q.) Will there be multiplayer servers? Is there ranking?
A.) We expect the game to get its own servers on the XBox Live platform. A ranking system is expected. No concrete details have been released as of yet.

Q.) When is the game coming out?
A.) The official release date is currently October 19th, 2017.

Please pin this thread @“Andy P” or @AnotherRiddle

I pinned it because I love you, rhrmn. But this info is a few other places, I believe. Regardless, it’s good to throw another coat of paint up there, I suppose.

Say, one thing I would add about beta leaks and the NDA that I don’t think has been mentioned: There’s this line of dissent we are seeing raised frequently that essentially argues that insofar as either someone else has leaked info and/or insofar as MS isn’t releasing gameplay footage at the pace you happen to think is fast enough, some folks seem to argue that talking about more than is otherwise allowed should be fine. So they do.

That misses the point. Microsoft just announced no fewer than four separate titles that will each presumably be drawing from the same pool of beta applicants. Even if you aren’t in this round of this beta, we aren’t even close to finishing what will likely be a years-long global development cycle.

Squawking about leaks – even if they otherwise have nothing to do with you – is a terrific proxy to show you can’t be trusted with keeping secrets.

I love you too man.

Never heard anyone complain about too many warning signs.

I thought I’d post it because people don’t go into the announcements page to read anything, they come straight to the Questions or General discussion - just look at all the repeat threads ;-). I actually forgot myself that there is already an “official” FAQ in there ;p

Sorry your answer tilted me, Aoe II is not the only game with gates… and I didnt know that till we reached the middle ages we invented gates.

Is nostalgic reason.

Looks like it’s time to update that release date

Needs a friendly mod edit by @“Andy P”, same with What We Know thread as well.

Q.) When is the game coming out?
A.) The official release date is currently October 19th, 2017.

I didn’t see this covered in the FAQ, why has the date changed and even more why was I issued a refund when I didn’t request one?

This just means I have to pay, again, just to pre-order!

You were issued a refund probably because they changed the date after the payment was processed.

Because it’s a refund, it means you are no longer on preorder, as typically you won’t be wanting to pay for it again later if you requested a refund! This case is different, but probably not supported by the current system

I will buy this game if it appears on steam, all my friend have steam accounts and most of my games are on steam. it iwll be a great mistake not to publish on steam. thank you

All the other Age of Empires games are on Steam. Even Xbox/Windows games are on Steam. In fact, there’s a bundle called “Microsoft RTS Collection”. It comes with every AoE, AoM, Rise of Nations:EE, & even Halo Wars:DE. It’s safe to say that AoE:DE will come to Steam. CAN’T WAIT! Especially for AoEII:DE!

Well they’ve stated that they will keep it on Microsoft store. Wouldnt mind it being on steam personally tho.

Q - If Age of Empires: Definitive Edition were to be released on another PC store/platform (such as Steam) in the future, would the online multiplayer pool be split and people that bought it on Windows Store couldn’t play with people that bought it on Steam?

Thanks! The store doesn’t matter to me at all. But I do really care about the game’s multiplayer experience.

Q - What types of matches will Age of Empires: Definitive Edition online multiplayer play support? 3vs3? 4vs4? free-for-all?
