Future of German speaking countries in the game (Poll)

Frederik the great was an elector of the holy roman empire, most of his lands where inside of the HRE.

this isnt denmark, sweden or britain having territory inside of the empire but actually being outside of it, this is a state within the empire with territory outside of it.

not within time period, or at best barely, and as most have stated the faction as is is more Austrian the Prussian.

why do you think germans have hungary as a revolt option? or vienna riding school?

as much as i would be for unique age ups for europeans, this is again one of the few things we know the devs wont do.

Ok so at least we can now lay to rest the idea of splitting the Germans or adding Austria-Hungary, Austria or Prussia. So let’s try something else for the Germans: access to colonial armies and resources from the German possessions in Africa (Burundi, Cameroon, Namibia, Rwanda, Tanzania and Togo). I know we already have access to Askari infantry units as mercenaries, but how about having access to other colonial German units of the Schutztruppe, like cavalry, camel riders, Maxim guns, different kinds of Askari soldiers, etc. I’m aware this is very late in the time period covered in the game but since Askaris are already included why not expanding on them?

Wouldn’t this be more relevant to the French Civ as they are meant to be the best European Civ for native soldiers.

If anything Germany didn’t have much colonial holding in Africa especially when compared to the British and French. Germany only got colonial possessions in Africa formally after the Berlin Conference of 1884.

tbh I’m still waiting for that and the Brits to get Ghurkas

But let’s not get too distracted, this is a German civ discussion

Of course you are totally correct. Why not include all colonial armies in Africa?

You just made me think of the French Foreign Legion

It is one dev that has stated that opinion. Things could always change.

The reasoning Tilanus gave is pretty flawed too.

You can’t split cultures:

  • There are 2 Anglo and 2 Hispanic civs
  • The Austrian Empire was >75% non-German

It’s inconsistent to not also split India/China:

  • China is >90% Han and almost always a singular state
  • India needs to be split too

Europeans have to have Politicians:

  • Why gatekeep to retain a boring design?
  • Prussia doesn’t actually have to have state age ups (but it would be much better with)

People are free to argue against something that’s being done for objectively dumb reasons.

the Berlin conference is outside of the games scope. games ends in 1876 being generous.

There are plenty of references to at least 1899.

which is obviously why all units have reapeter rifles and we got maxims, telegrafs and dreadnoughts.

that a few cards reference something later, mostly added in TAD mind you, doesnt change that the game by the original devs was meant to go to the 1850s and that it got pushed to 1876 with the expansion and that we see no actual tech beyond that.

Austrians are not Gemans. They have own culture , history , economy. Habsburg Empire was a really important player in AOE 3 period. They also had Czech , Hungarian , Slovakian people in this faction these days , Germans don’t. So i think that Devs should add Austria as Dlc/Flc in the future and everything will be good :+1:

There are repeating rifles and machine guns. Telegraphs are ~1840 so we could easily have that even with your earlier date. The first Dreadnought was 1906 which is much later.

Vanilla was set before ~1850, but the timeline has been pushed back since Warchiefs. We have cards with very late references like Porfiriato (1876+) and Boxer Rebellion (1899). Having Mexico and USA civs is anachronistic even with an end date of 1899 and completely ridiculous with a 1876 end. TAR also is chocked full of later references. There are colonial African treasure guardians (post 1884 Berlin Conference), and Somali Dervishes (1896).

what machinegun is in the game? gattlingguns are not machineguns and also from the 1860s.

then battleships, like there is still a lot of steps between what AOE3 displays and dreadnought.

austrians where germans and are culturally closer to bavaria than bavaria is to the rest of germany. german history through most of AOE3 has an austrian emperor, we got revolutions in the game that are clearly austrian and the units are mostly austrian or a part of the austrian crown.

How are Gatling Guns not machine guns? There are also more advanced versions like the Coffee Mill Guns or the ones used on Gatling Camels.

During the AOE3de time period the Holy Roman Emperor was often an Austrian based in Vienna. Look at the last Holy Roman Emperor - Francis 2nd [1792-1806] (AKA Francis 1st of Austria). This is a fair (but not definitive) historic justification to make the current German civ into Austria. Then make a New Prussian civ DCL.

Alternatively…
Due to the collapse of the Holy Roman Empire in 1806 by the hand of Napoleon (which fits in around the Imperial Age in the AOE3 timeline), would it not make sense for there to be a diverge from the common agenda of the empire to a more Nationalistic one by each of the individual states?

I am not suggesting a revolution but a full priced Age Up option that allows German players to continue the game as one of the many HRE nation states; namely Prussia and Austria but maybe also Saxony or Bavaria too. This should involve some reskinned units and a new Home City deck, but not much more than that. Would be a simple way to represent the different nations without too much change regarding game play.

Austrians are most definitely Germans. German is just a continuum that ranges from Swamp Germans to Yodeling Germans.

Same ethnic/language group, different countries. Just like Serbia and Montenegro or Romania and Moldova.

Don’t imply people are Nazis for saying Austrians are German.
