Whilst I don’t care particularly for the other AoE games, you probably will never find me on the forums with some kind of vendetta, spouting purposely incendiary stuff.
I’m sorry you felt the need to here. Most of us are a good bunch and the odd person on a forum on a website for a real time strategy series of videogames based on history has obviously rubbed you up the wrong way.
Did you know that the Earth, not to mention the whole universe will probably all reach maximum entropy one day and succumb to universal heat death, to which nothing will exist?
The tone of a thread invites replies in kind. I’d personally prefer it if we could all get along as fans of the same franchise, but with AoE III support ending so fresh in peoples’ minds, I completely get why some would still be upset.
I rarely ever visit the forums for AoE2 and AoE3. I was bored last night and thought I would check them. Then I noticed a thread by a familiar poster who was stirring shit in AoE4 forums a few days ago, so I clicked on it. I read and liked the first 2 replies. Then I read your reply.
Admittedly, some of us aren’t in the best mood atm. We were strung along for over a year with the promise of a DLC only to then have it and all service for the game canceled.
Most of the posts probably are gone now, but we had some AoE4 and possibly 2 players coming over here to gloat while the announcement wasn’t a week old. I’m quite sure the differences between the games (and AoE3 not being a direct successor to 2) cause them to attract different people, and are likely the cause of some strife. I don’t know what side started it, but it’s kinda ridiculous.
I’ve thought this since before it was released. I played aoe4 for over 40 hours and came to this conclusion and realized the direction the game was heading was not a pathway I agreed with and stopped. Yes it’s my subjective opinion and others are welcome to think the same of aoe3. The difference is, I’m not going to other forums and channels to badmouth people that prefer the other games. Not sure why others come here to do that very thing.
I might think the game is garbage but I don’t think the players are. Other than the ones that prove otherwise.
No, you’re doing it here. Well, it’s good to know how AoE3 players feel about our game, in case they come and ask us for support on our forums or on Reddit subs.
It would be nice too, and this is coming from someone who was pretty harsh on AoEIV when it came out, just as I was with the botched launch of 3DE. I’m not above being a hypocrite. While not entirely fair, AoEIV has its own set of stigmas that will follow the game just like AoE3 has.
During last year’s Redbull event, the entire chat had to be nuked because AoE2 players were crapping all over AoEIV.
It’s just the nature of the AoE fandom spread across these games in a highly competitive but small RTS environment. And even in its heyday relations within this fanbase were never rosey. AoE3 players have been taking shit from AoE2 players for 20 years now so they tend to have a chip on their shoulder never mind the mistreatment, neglect, and outright lies they’ve been dealing with from WE. Calling for better communication? it started with but no one listened or cared because it’s AoE3 lulz.
As someone previously mentioned, there have been plenty of people from 2DE, AoMR, and AoEIV crowd who came here and other places to dance on our grave, and it’s not because a handful of AoE3 players said mean things about another game. 3DE dies? maybe my game will get more support!!!
Also, two of the biggest shitstirrers in the AoEIV forum who mention 3DE a lot are people who have barely interacted with the 3DE forum so take that as you will.
Why were you at the funeral shittalking then?
What did you expect? Aoe4 appreciation thread in the middle of the company BSing the aoe3 community for almost 2 years? Do you have any social capacity to “read a room?”
I could go crawl aoe4 for tons of shittalking aoe3 threads and comments but I dont because 1-if they dont play aoe3 they likely have complaints and 2- id rather spend time praising aoe3 with fellow aoe3 players. This isnt a complicated issue you definetly are trying to clutch pearls over 1 mans opinion.
Edit- funnier to becasue that man literally helped design your game.
I’m not gonna read all that. Your first sentence clearly shows you’re looking for a fight and pretending you don’t understand what happened. There was no reason for your friend to shit talk AoE4, especially after having called out OP’s bait.
Respectfully, this is not how you express an opinion.
You are the one who came into the AOE3 space looking for a fight. Or are you legitimately confused as to why the AOE3 community isn’t taking kindly to your presence as you try to dance on our grave?
The AOE4 community is full of toxic people like you. Not everyone, but far too many.
What a shocker! AOE3 fans are expressing an opinion that they prefer AOE3 in an AOE3 space! Wow!
The AOE4 community has generally been outright hostile to every other AOE game under a false sense of superiority since launch. You can attempt to lie and say your community’s refusal support AOE3 is due to AOE3 players not liking AOE4, but that’s been the case for 4 years now.
Also, Vivid is a dev who worked on AOE3 and 4. He isn’t just an AOE3 fan
This is a fact. While there are people on the AOM and AOE-3 forums bragging about screenshots of their games, I don’t see the same thing on the AOE-4 forums. And if you push the developers, or whoever is in charge to improve said product in this regard, they will tell you that you are a hater.
Most of the criticism was focused on the lack of artistic elements compared to previous games, and not just AOE-3. Do you know that the criticism was much more focused on criticizing the incompetence of a company, than on the game itself? People were just pushing for the game to be better, and criticizing how hypocritical they were for introducing “weird game” mechanics that nobody cares about. It’s obvious that people get upset.
There were never any direct attacks on the community itself (in most cases), and the game was criticized long before it had an established fan base. And you should be thankful that AOE-3 players show up on the AOE-4 forums. They seem to be the only ones open to change and new ideas.
AOE-3 also has many flaws in its design, nobody says it doesn’t, but its basic ideas have always been great. Revolutions for example are nonsense in competitive games. Especially Mexico, which doesn’t even need a standard economy to make soldiers.
And numbers don’t always mean something is superior or inferior. There are hit songs with billions of views on YouTube that are rubbish music, while someone singing in the corner of a restaurant is unknown, but sings much better.
I meant. No game in the series should look better than AOE-4.
You talk like you’re a club or something and we need your approval to gain relevance (as if we were a closed club too).
AOE-3 players are mostly not blind fanatics who think that 2005 was the pinnacle of the saga’s evolution. Don’t compare us to that other community that thinks that 1999 was the pinnacle of RTS.
It’s fine to have a game that you love and enjoy, but it’s still a product in a virtual store that people can criticize and demand how it could be better. Learn to differentiate between hating a product and being upset with those in charge of it.
In my opinion, none do. YMMV. But I don’t go around saying it in this subforum. I only participated here because people were talking about tone, and I was trying to de-escalate a bit. vividlyplain gave a great and understandable response.
Can confirm, AoE 2 players tend to be extremely conservative when it comes to adding “extreme” stuff that is normal for other games, whether it’s the armor ignoring ability of Leitis and Composite Bowman, the “shield” the Shrivamsha have and whatnot.
Besides, many of the suggestions AoE3 players share are ones that would objectievely improve AoEIV a great deal such as increasing the flora and fauna variety of the maps, improving siege, more personality, etc. Lots of people who never played AoE3 seem to agree as well.
People can dislike AoE3 for a number of reasons but to ignore the good things it brought to the table is petty and shortsighted. You’re only hurting yourself in the long run. I’d say the same for Masteries in AoEIV which I think are an excellent addition to the franchise and I hope they continue and evolve for future iterations.
Something that gets lost in the weeds is the fact many AoE3 players started out with another game whether it be AoE2 or AoM. That tends to put them in a unique postion within the Age fanbase in the sense that they can offer a more open minded perspective. I mean, we did choose the oddball as our primary Age game after all.
