Getting hyped for AOM Retold

Not having pre-purchased and just watching streams of the game, the beta of retold has positively surprised me and honestly hyped me up.
After the disappointment of aoe4 and destruction of aoe3de a good year after launch (pumping it with mercenarioes, civs and changing all civs to an extreme extend), I did not think Microsoft would deliver a good rts anymore, which stands up to the old quality standard of previous aoe titles (1, 2, aom and aoe3) until the early 2000s.

I will not pre-purchase the game and wait for final results on release though, out of caution.

I’d like to know how you guys, who have already played the beta now, liked it.

  • I played the beta and it is amazing already!
  • I played the beta and it was ok
  • I played the beta and it has big potential! Waiting for final version
  • I played the beta and it has too many flaws, don’t like it

Performance issues aside, the beta is great and I feel like AoM Retold will kind of serve as a wake up call for players that got into the series with AoE 4 as AoM had and has features AoE 4 is still waiting to get, such as being able to save and restore crashed MP games.

They also added a ranked benchmark test that was originally introduced with AoE 2 DE but for whatever reason left out in AoE 3 and 4 that puts your PC on a stress test to see whether it can run the game under heavy conditions. It still looks to be bugged because on my PC I only get the lowest score despite 50-60 FPS.

Thanks for the reply!
What you are writing mirrors my impression from watching the streams.
The little I could catch from the streams already looked more polished than aoe4 post launch lmao.
Very promising!

I can imagine that too…
Let’s just hope AOM Retold will have an amazing launch and will not do the same mistakes as aoe2de, aoe3de and aoe4 on launch, being half finished and in severe technically problematic state, which tons of required QOL features missing.
But what you are writing sounds very promising.

I honestly love the aoe3de engine, so the graphics, splattering of buildings when being shot, the aesthetic movement of (especially cavalry!!!) units, all these things are looking so amazing already!!!
Reminds me very much of aoe3(de). Just super nice to look at, the units move smoothly, formation movements are similar to aoe3de as well, not like aoe4.
The aoe4 unit movement always bothered me a lot, it looks very unnatural and the units seem to be weightless, glide around and completely destroy immersion.
Also super clunky to micro, compared to the crisp aoe3de micro.

At least aom retold LOOKS amazing in these ways, let’s hope it feels amazing as well on release day without any further patching already.

It could be, as you are saying, the game-changing game to gain back trust for the aoe/aom series.
It is honestly M$crosoft’s last chance.
