Q1. Did I intentionally lose games to lower my ELO?
No. If lowering my ELO had been my goal, I would not have played more than 6,000 games using the United States civilization only.
I simply left games when I got a combination of a map I did not want to play and a civilization I did not want to play against. In those situations, I just had no motivation to play the match.
After playing thousands of games, I eventually reach a point where I can look at the loading screen and immediately recognize certain map and civilization matchups that I simply do not have the skill to beat.
Q2. Why did I keep leaving games?
Age of Empires III has a very small player base.
On top of that, the hours when I usually played were almost the exact opposite of peak hours in the United States and Europe, so there were even fewer players available.
Sometimes it was because of a map I wanted to avoid, but there were also certain players whom I found extremely difficult and frustrating to play against. Because the matchmaking system would sometimes match me with the same players over and over again, I would end up leaving several games in a row.
For example, if you see that I played 10 full games in a row and then left the next 10 games within 30 seconds, this was probably the reason.
Q3. Why am I writing this?
I did not even know that this topic had been posted back in 2023. I only recently discovered that these discussions existed while talking with ChatGPT.
I would like to apologize to the players who were frustrated or annoyed because of the way I played.
There is one particular player who played Lakota whom I still remember. You were incredibly strong.
- Once you figured out how to counter my strategy, it became practically impossible for me to ever beat you.
- Continuing to play for more than 30 minutes when I already knew that defeat was inevitable was extremely frustrating for me.
- Could I have switched to another civilization and tried again? Sure, but I simply wanted to play the United States.
- Could I have changed my strategy while continuing to play the United States? With my level of skill, I would simply have lost even faster.
You were an extremely skilled and intelligent player. I did not want to waste either your time or mine, so I surrendered as soon as the game started.
If matchmaking had worked through a lobby where both players had to press a Start button before the match began, I would have left the lobby as soon as I saw you rather than wasting your time by entering the match and immediately surrendering.
Anyway, I no longer play this game, so you will not have to worry about being matched with me again.
Because the Age of Empires III community is relatively small, there may still be some people out there who remember enigma0501.
