From the Danish one:

> _Evidence indicates that the Danes have inhabited modern-day Denmark since at least 3,000 BCE, migrating there after the Ice Age_

…what the actual fuck? Did the Funnelbeaker culture members already identify as Danish? What kind of an ultra-nationalist Hyperboreanist wrote that nonsense, I don’t think even an AI could’ve commited such a crime on historiography.

On other topics: as expected, new history sections ignore post-Viking Period histories, there’s no word on the Kalmar Union or the Duchy of Saxony.

Yeah, I don’t really understand what this means. In what sense were these people Danes back in 3000 BC?

Yeah, but it’s kinda dumb to pretend that the only Saxons that matter are those who settled in England. Even if they are based solely on the British ones, a note in the history section about their cousins still thriving in Germany would’ve been nice.

No wonder the German translation calls the civ Anglo-Saxons.

Is this new? The game implied the Berber empires existed in 300 BCE. Back then the civilization was the Numidians and Mauritani and it wasn’t the same imperial powers so who knows

I mean at least Numidians in 300 BC spoke a Berber language and practiced the pagan Berber religion. Nobody in 3000 BC Denmark spoke Danish or knew who Odin is.

That’s because the Saxons, as the devs seem to define them, don’t cover the Anglican lands. Anglicans for them seem to be Britons/English. Evidence: history section naming only Sussex, Wessex, Essex and Midsex as Saxon states, while ignoring the Anglican ones, the AI player names which are purely from those states + Anglo-Saxon merger like the Godwinsons, scenarios that showcase Wessex as Saxons while Mercia is Britons, etc.

As for Aethelfrith specifically, the kingdoms of Bernicia and Deira are treated as Briton rather than Anglican… or, they’re some kind of middle-ground between the two. And with Celtic Briton people, the devs flip-flop between portraying them as Celts or Britons.

In other words, the whole region is a mess of overlapping concepts. Imo, I don’t mind Saxons being limited to just Saxons, but then the Saxon civ should’ve had a stronger focus on continental Saxons and northern German (Low German) territories, ala Brandenburg, Hanseatic League, Saxony, etc.

There is nothing wrong with saying they have inhabited Denmark since 3,000 BC\*.

Nobody has ever said they identified as Danish and that is not the standard that other civilizations are held to. They don’t need to identify as Danish to be encompassed within the broader Danes civ.

Civilizations in AOE 2 are broad categories. The Mongols include the Scythians and other nomadic cultures in the campaigns. Malians represent a wider selection of West Africa (and the famous Ghebetos were not even strictly Malian). Likewise, the Burmese tech “Manipur Cavalry” and their unique unit, the Arambia were used by a neighboring but separate people called the Manipur.

It’s factually wrong, though.

It’s not about identity, it’s being factually wrong.

Because there’s no Scythian civ, not because Scythians were Mongols.

Because there’s no other West African civs. Gbetos are technically not even a real unit, if we’re holding it to standard.

Because “Burmese” is more of a regional rather than ethnic term. And Manipur is in Burma.

But, yes, it’s an inaccuracy born of not having any other civs in the area.

Strawman.

Check the Attila the Hun campaign. Scythians have been Mongols since 2000. Civs in AOE 2 encompass a broad spectrum of time and various tangentially related peoples, nations, and empires.

Because AoE2 has nothing close to Scythians or any other Irannic steppe peoples or empires in it. Does not make Mongols a good fit or mean Mongols cover Scythians. Check the ai player names for the Mongols, no Scythians.

There are Scythian units in Chronicles that could have been used.
