How does team elo work?

I face players of different levels completely in ranked team, yet they carry the same elo. and games are super unbalanced.

for example my teammate can be 800 elo 1v1 and 1100 in team, and opponent is 1400 in 1v1 and also 1100 in team, and we matched. the 1400 opponent is way strionger than my teammate

sometimes people have 1000 1v1, and 1200 team, thats quite common. then there are others with 1500+ 1v1, and also 1200 in team. The match is completely unbalanced.

Why some people have much higher 1v1 than team elo, others have much lower 1v1 than team elo?

team elo doesnt reflect his real skill at all. from my experience the 1v1 elo is more accurate/

can we just match people using 1v1 rating in team? if he has one?

Hi @wiraqocha9917 ,

I believe this article will explain to you how the current matchmaking and Elo system works:
Updates to Ranked Team Game Elo Calculation - Age of Empires

I know that, i just ask why a lot of people with high 1v1 skill playing with very low team rating, and dominant others easily. Are they smurfs?

And also why my teammate are always those with low 1v1 skill and carrying high team elo and don’t live up to that?

Team elo is not a good indication of true skill, 1v1 elo is

This is not necessarily accurate. Team games play very different from 1v1s. A good 1v1 player may be a terrible Team game player & vice versa.

If you list your in-game username, it would be possible to look back through the games you have played to determine whether you are a statistical outlier. However, it is unlikely that every team game (or even the majority of your team-games) always pairs you with a weaker ally.

Depending on the game-type you are queuing for (2v2,3v3,4v4) it is possible that your Elo range doesn’t have a lot of players playing at the same time as you, thus the game brings in someone with a bit lower Elo and matches you with a group of players that have equal average Elo so you don’t have to wait as long for a game.

If you actually are in the minority in the top percentage of players in the world always matched with weaker allies, rather than complain about them, please take the time to communicate with your allies and teach them how to play better at the game. This not only will help them enjoy the game and be welcoming to less experienced players, but you might also surprise yourself by winning a few more games with good communication that otherwise would have been losses.

While there are undoubtedly people who smurf, this is most often because people may just play one game mode more than the others. I know that personally, I only ever player team games. So, for the game to use my 1v1 Elo, it would be a completely inaccurate representation of my skill level.

Skills that are relevant in team games aren’t always as relevant in 1v1s. For example, in a 1v1, if you’ve lost your base, you’ve usually lost the match. In a team game, it may be possible to rebuild (allies can sling you back in or buy you time to rebuild) or otherwise contribute and losing a base isn’t a death sentence to the team (especially if the opponents also lost a base). Setting up and protecting trade also isn’t relevant in most 1v1s, but is more relevant in team games. And team games tend to go longer, so late-game skills are more important in team games than in 1v1s. And of course, good communication with allies is important in team games, but has no place in 1v1.

Some things are shared though: ability to use a build order, to adapt your strategy based on the situation, ability to micro units and manage an economy, etc.

But i reality most of the time players with high 1v1 did dominate lower rated players. It shows they know how to play team.

I’d expect team game ELO and 1v1 ELO to be highly correlated. Enough of the basic skills are shared that a player who is strong in a 1v1 match will generally do well in a team game. However, it is not 100% correlated, which is an argument for keeping the ELOs separate. And being able to work well on your own doesn’t mean being able to work well with others, so strong 1v1 players can lose to weaker players who work well together.
