How to deal with wallers?

I’m sick of it! They always rewall, and Goths really don’t have good ranged options. I’m guessing rams, but then they’ll still rewall continuously, and make mangos. Then they reach imp before me, so there’s really no way to stop them. And yes, I know it’s a better idea to boom as Goths, but whenever I do that, my opponent has a larger boom, so it becomes pointless.

If they’re stuck in their base then they cant get external resources or relics. The further scrunched in they are the more ground you have covered to set the pace of the match. Castles near their wall. The castles seem to shred walls and petards have this one niche

Got it. But what if they already have a castle?

Each castle is 6.5 TCs worth of stone spent defensively.

Ok, but I doubt anyone (except a few select civs, like Burgundians, or spanish) would make 6-7 more town centers. Unless they’re crazy or in a custom game with high pop limit.

Even still, they gathered that stone, that stone is ergo not going towards TCs, and the Vill time spent on stone was not instead spent gathering the resources needed to boom and tech faster

I think the best option here is to simply not go Goths. They really suck.

But the Goths do have BBCs, so try taking down their walls from a distance.

Turtling means the enemy probably won’t be on the offensive. Keep booming, imperial age, trebuchets and let’s see how long your opponent can keep an attrition war when his precious limited stone gets severely outranged.

I think that Goths would deal with walls much the same way any other civ deals with them. Attacking before the walls are up is an option (Between their hunt bonus and infantry discount, Goths have a good drush and a good scout rush). Booming is an option. Siege equipment (trebs, rams, petards, siege towers, etc.) is another option. Castle drop is also an option (and also would make huskarls available). And finally, Goth infantry have extra bonus damage against buildings, so attacking a house (or other building) in the wall is sometimes an option.

Good question!

Dealing with someone who walls up (AKA “turtling”) can be dealt with in a couple different ways.

First consider the map-type as this will greatly change how you play the game: is this an open map (i.e. Arabia, Gold Rush, etc.) or a closed map (i.e. Black Forest, Arena, etc.).

If the map is closed (already pre-walled or very easily walled), then you will have a very difficult time attempting to attack the enemy early. Your best chance of success is to attempt a “Fast-Castle” strategy, into either a castle drop with petards & knights (or some other civ specific unit); or dropping multiple TCs and booming to the Imperial Age before your opponent.

If the map is open (no pre-walling, and fewer patches of trees making it difficult to wall completely), then you should attempt some type of feudal age rush, whether that is Archers, Scouts, etc. If done correctly, you should be able to get to your opponent before they are able to completely wall. As such, you will be able to punish their undefended eco, especially if they have not made a military and are only attempting to wall and boom.

That all being said, the best way to get better at the game is to follow a couple standard Build Orders.

If you haven’t already:

These have been tried and tested over the years and are the best way to become more competitive at the game.

That all being said, in your specific use case playing as the Goths, going for a Fast Castle Boom into Imperial Age Infantry Spam with Bombard Cannons is very difficult to stop
