How to easily create real-world maps?

I often see real-world maps drawn very accurately, which makes me wonder if there’s an easy way to create them.

There is a tool named Imagenario, which generates a scenario from an image (each pixel is a map tile):
https://aok.heavengames.com/blacksmith/showfile.php?fileid=12728
It was written for the file format of the CD version (compatible with DE), so it doesn’t support maps larger than 255x255 tiles. A workaround is using the map copy tool in the Scenario Editor to combine multiple maps created with Imagenario.

Another tool, which I haven’t tried out:

Maybe there are more, I’m only aware of these.

Thank you! I’ve tried using my “Extended Europe” map with a terrain image, but I was unable to run the program. I’m most likely doing something wrong.

Wow, I didn’t know about this tool and it’s from Aokh’s time! It would have been so useful for my maps.

The Siege Engineers also have a website where you can paste an image which then gets converted into a .rms script

My trick is to use a reference image that I overlay over the minimap.
There are some applications providing this feature and they are mostly aimed at artists but it works for AoE too.

I just cut out an AoE2 (or AoM/AoE3) minimap size part of a map. Often I use maps showing the historical political situation of the setting I want to model so I can also place the important cities and other locations correctly.

This program thinks there are 159 distinct colors in this image.

Pretty sure I’m not colorblind.

Also, it distorts the map toward the northeast, which I don’t want.
