Especially in a team game, where everyone attempt to get the relics. If I am Aztecs or Lithuanians, what is the best can I secure the relics for myself without much issues in such a situation?
If your teammates are taking the relics, communicate with them and ask that they deliver the relics to your Monasteries. If you’re Lithuanians and they don’t respond, you have this random bloke’s permission to send Mangonels to their Monasteries and take the relics for yourself.
To stop enemies from taking them, plant units such as Pikemen or Light Cavalry next to them while you wait for your Monks to train. Keep a close eye on the relics and micro your units as usual.
This is extremely BM and I would discourage OP from doing this and you from giving such advice. Not giving Relics to the player who can make the most of them is a small injustice, attacking someone’s base, a big one. Might as well attack ground his farms or wall off his starting TC.
Also I can’t understate that if you are playing the ONE faction that actually needs Relics (Lithuanians) to be good, most people will oblige and give you the Relics in Imp if you ask nicely, particularly given how Gold isn’t exactly a resource you compete for within the same team in a TG since markets exist.
I dont think there is a magic formula for that.
In team games, you have trade for gold. Aztecs dont need relics more than their teamates because their relics bonus applies to the whole team. So in late game, just ask for gold.
As Lituanians, ask your teamates to give you relics, and maybe remind them it benifits your heavy cavalry. If they dont want, so be it. Better win the game without the feeling of 4-relics paladins than lose while fighting for them.
Assuming you and your teamates agree on a relic distribution, I think the key aspect is to scout for relics (or be with a Burmese) and secure map control in early to mid game. If the opponents are forced on the defense or trying to boom, your team will have a easier time to secure the relics, as the opponent wont put much of a contest and you can delay picking relics (focussing mainly on map control). You can have one of you making monks to take relics, while the others teamates focus only on army for map control.
considering that the Aztec bonus is a TEAM bonus, this is horrible advice
Edited to clarify I specifically refer to Lithuanians. Aztecs’ TB is neat, but nothing to get sore over since your allies benefit from it.
If you’re willing to sacrifice your economy, stone and age up times in order to secure the relics, you can send a villager or two out in feudal age to stone wall them in. Or house wall them in if you want to save stone for TCs. I sometimes do this when I’m playing against Lithuanians to stop them getting the power spike.
What I do is send out scouts to guard each relic before the enemy has the chance to get them. This probably only works against the AI, though.
