How to make a revolutionary medieval RTS in 2021

i really wish to know , is that really difficult to make the game like this?

…Company of Heroes 1/2? Iron Harvest?

I really would love to see a similar mechanic of AOE3 with little neutral settlements that you could conquest and make it your vassals. These settlements would have differents features and buff for your empire, like trading, tributes, unique techs, unique units availability, etc.

Even, being an Age of “Empires” conquesting settlements should be a requirement to uping ages

Some of these sound fine, but honestly some of them sound terrible.

Can’t say I agree with every idea here, but I can agree with the motivation. A generic game in a dead genre is just another dead game.

It would be a 10 pages long post. Of course I have issues with graphics and UI but there are plenty others who have voiced their opinion on those topics.

lol. Well yeah, of course my wishes are not meant for everybody. The point is mostly to evidence that with a little bit of creativity and courage (hey Apple), you can add a lot more variety to the admittedly boring old school mechanics in AoE IV. In any case, few-to-none of those things are going to end up in the game so we can all chill.

Precisely. RTS games are niche nowadays and if you don’t risk it, you will only sell to that same niche audience (at best) and be forgotten. This is not that game that will bring RTS back from the shadows. What was the last really popular RTS? Ashes of the Singularity? And popular is a stretch…

I would’ve loved to fight in the rain, at night with torches all around sort of like the Helm’s Deep battle. I can’t see s#$4? I don’t care, it’d look epic and would be memorable. For all others who like the small tree mod in AoE II and midday sun for readability, there’d be no change.

That brings up another simplistic approach that AoE has taken with pikes. Pikemen were not just anti-cavalry specialists and could actually hold their own (and win) against dismounted man-at-arms forces. Going back to the unit formations point I made, I would’ve loved to see AoE IV implementing different stances depending on how you wanted pikemen to behave. Pikemen in an offensive formation would excel against other dismounted melee but be more vulnerable to cav for example. But you would also have porcupine or block formations. In real life those formations were carefully planned according to the terrain so reorienting the whole battalion was not a trivial task. AoE IV already has ambush mechanics so you can easily surprise a group of pikemen defending the wrong direction.

And we don’t have to go Total War extremes of realism to implement this. The Battle for Middle Earth games had more balanced pikes and the games were as arcadey as they come. You could do porcupine formations for instance:
