How to make legacy unit icons/portraits work in DE?

Hello,

I’m desperately trying to create a mod that replaces the DE musketeer’s icon with the legacy one. Through the resource manager I extraced the needed icons from each game version.
Though instead of having a true transparency, the legacy musketeer’s clothing is white. Maybe it has to do with the shadows on his coat?
I don’t have Photoshop but #### at my disposal. How do I make the original musketeer work in DE?

Thanks in advance!

The way playercolor is made in each version of the game is different.

In the old version of the game it was by an alpha channel and the files were ddts. DE doesn’t really read that as the playercolor in DE is interpreted through layer masks (and the files are PNGs.)

Even if you don’t have Photoshop at your disposal you can still try some free software like Photopea or Krita (You needed plugins for ddts. in Photoshop anyways.)

Well, with the resource manager I was able to get the original Musketeer in png format also.
In my post I said I had the free “photoshop” software Gym but with an i instead of an y and with a p at the end.
I tried adding transparency onto the white clothing but I just don’t know how to get it done properly :frowning:

Hi RollerGton,
I think i have a solution for you here.
Just open Photoshop and there you you can make a png after your preferences for the musketeer, the you can drop it into Age of Empires.
Glad I could help, but if you face any issues nonetheless, feel free to ask.

Don’t use that program lol. It’s trash.

So I used Photopea now. I managed to add a layer mask like shown in the attachment. The old musketeer does appear in game. However, the player colour on the transparent mask does not change but stay black. What would I have to do to fix this?
Musketeer

Here how it was done in Photopea:

Nevermind, I made it by ditching using a fully transparent mask entirely.
Instead, I used a regular white clothing musketeer as background of one with a transparent jacket. Then I simply reduced the oppacity of the normal one to 10% and it finally worked. Even with all the shadows on the jacket.
Thank you for your programm suggestion, HoopThrower!
