Not to sound like a cringe gamer bro, but what possessed the devs to turn the hottest character in the game into a hideous Groot ripoff? I would have no problem with her looking more elemental if they went with something more like Te Fiti’s design in Moana, but why is she Groot??? Why is she a tree at all??? She’s not the goddess of trees. She’s the earth, you know, the thing trees grow out of. If she must be a tree, why give her that hideous noseless face??? This design doesn’t resemble any traditional depiction of her that has ever existed in ancient or modern times.
I hope we someday get a mod or DLC that restores her in-game look to how she was originally. The classic portraits option isn’t enough.
The OG looked better, even if it was just a woman in grass bikini (in-game), perhaps making her a more mature woman wearing a peplo or tunic, with her feet’s and arm’s being earth like gradually becoming skin and her hair having leafs, her arms vines and whatnot, a mishmash of her old portrait and her in-game look, a sweet middle ground

I noticed pretty much every sexualized goddess design from the original game was significantly toned down in Retold. It’s probably something related to ratings. Doesn’t excuse the terrible Gaia redesign though.
If they would design gods like they were historically portrait they wouldn’t be that SFW. Then some random people would outcry over how video games are corrupting children again or something.

I agree, the new design of Gaia isn’t great. It looks far too cartoonish. I only hope they release more alternative statues and portraits. People have called for a new community event that includes unique statues of major gods, me included
Initially, yes. They even gave Circe a more modest outfit. But then along comes Obsidian Mirror, and the goddesses are super sexy, with a retro fantasy aesthetic much like in the original.
I doubt it’s about ratings, because women in sexy outfits shouldn’t affect the rating of a game as long as there’s no nudity. They were probably just playing safe in regards to inane culture war discourse around sexy female characters in video games. Now that the game is a success, they don’t have to play it so safe.
Lame af though. I can’t believe they put clothes on Aphrodite of all people. It reminds me of that modesty mod that was on steam for the extended edition. At least the guy who made that is happy.
i really disliked her old design. it looked like a “Demeter” / female shepard version or wife of Dionysus and not like Gaia. i like the new design more. makes her look more unique and primordial. i would even say out of the three atlantean major gods she looks the best. Oranus looks boring af. Kronos looks cool but like he tries to hard to look scary.
Like I said, I don’t mind her being more elemental. It’s the ugly Groot face that bothers me more than anything. Something like Te Fiti or Poison Ivy or ever the God of War version of Gaia would be preferable.
Especially since there’s a trend as of late to make every attractive female character ugly on purpose, which is just repulsive to me. There’s a war on attractiveness, and I will not stand for it.
Honestly, as I dislike the model change, I can understand it, the flower bikini was cleary made by “nerds” (for nerds, as game were targeted back then and better for it imo) and made it more in line with the other titans like Phrometeus and Kronos, and of course the “for the whole family” thingy. OK, again dont approve but also I still can understand the change
…but why the change for her 2D art? That one I still don’t understand and I think is just dumb because there was no reason for it. It doesnt fit the other Titan potraits (except Kronos and Oceanus, but I say Kronos is just as dumb to not potrait him in the art as a more normal dude like the other titans and Oceanus has the excuse of being underwater)

I’m not sure about that, but there is a bit of a culture war going on regarding sexualized female characters in video games, and it does seem like Retold’s art direction was informed by that. The fact that they gave Theia and Circe less revealing outfits and put any clothing at all on Aphrodite is telling. Thankfully, the new artistic team working on Obsidian Mirror has no such prudish hangups and they seem to be bringing AoM back to the retro fantasy aesthetic we know and love.
