I don’t think I’ve played a game I enjoy so much since Civilization 5. I play every day. I love the sound effects and the artwork and the UI. It’s all so engaging.
I wish they would jigger the difficulty level’s some so it wasn’t so much ‘crazy, insane, impossible’ but the new two-villager option helps with that.
I’m been a big AOE3 fan forever but this is just more fun to play. And it sounds great and it looks great.
Same! I’ve always enjoyed the RTS genre but AoE IV hits in a way that reminds me of when I pulled all nighters on the ladder in highschool. I can’t get enough of this game!
I can’t fully relate to either of you. To me, this is a good game, but not good enough to be obsessed about it. That might be because I previously played Starcraft 2 and Age of Empires 2.
I don’t know what you’re talking about. This might be part of a mod maybe.
For me, this is the best Age of Empires. The main reason is:
it has the most enjoyable AI of all, finally the AI controls its units by moving them as an entire army.
the first medieval game entirely in 3D.
it has several mechanics for collecting “infinite” resources, such as farms, sacred points, markets and unique means according to your civilization.
Unfortunately, however, for me, there are only 2 problems:
there is no option to create private matches in “LAN mode”. I don’t like playing on the Microsoft server because it is unstable. At first, we played with 7 to 8 people. Today, many of my friends stopped playing together, we are currently with 3 or 4 people… the reason is that there are many synchronization errors, which is bizarre and it is the only Steam game we play that has this error.
And finally, it is the lack of civilizations. This point is due to the fact that the game is new and they still have to release many DLCs to have more single player and coop content, as well as more civilizations. My favorite civilizations are: Vijayanagara and Cholas and also the Ayutthaya (Thailand), Mughal and finally the Timurids, however, none of these civilizations or variants were added to the game… so sometimes I get tired of playing because there is no civilization that I really like… but I hope that one day this will change.
This game is so buggy, sluggish, and a slog to play in, but I’m glad you’re loving it. Every time I play there are new gameplay fiascos and less-than-stellar UI/UX decisions and issues to deal with. Since you come from AoE3 as your previous gold standard, I can see how AoE4 is probably on par or better than that experience. AoE3 was riddled with odd design and gameplay decisions, too
AoE5 could be made by a different studio than Relic. Microsoft has many studios in its portfolio now, so we don’t need to be limited by or wait for DoW4
If AoE5 is ever made, it will probably be developed in Unreal Engine. Tempest Rising showed it’s possible, so I don’t see why they’d use Relic’s deprecated engine with its 200ms built in lag.
Sweet. Only issue with Tempest Rising is it’s showing the classic dreaded 3D perspective view for RTS, where bottom of screen looks “top-down” on buildings, and then top of screen is more “side view” of buildings. I don’t care for that.
The good news is Unreal Engine 5 can do orthographic camera. So, that’d be a must as the default AoE5 view, imo, or at least give an option to toggle it on.
Starts with ortho view, but they toggle to perspective mode at like 20 seconds in, so you can see the difference:
